>>ANNOUNCER1: This last month a local fabrication company built this ramp for the front door
and one for the back door to help Russ to get in and out of the house.
>>CASSIE HICKS: I get a lot from them as I get to know the families and trying to get
the best I have in order for them to realize their dream.
>>ANNOUNCER2: Eric Cartfield has been confined to a wheelchair since an accident almost 10
years ago. He used to live with his mom but found it hard to get around her house. He
decided to buid this house which is handicap accessible a few years ago but ran out of
money. Fortunately; he was told the Home of Your Own program which helped him to get the
remaining money he needed to finish his house.
>>CARTFIELD: I love the house; I really owned it like for a while and I love it. I'm enjoying
it. It has been like a month since living in there. And I really enjoy it.
>>ANNOUNCER2: Eric's house is very useable in a way. For one thing; the bathroom area
is very big. There's plenty room of his legs to get under the sink and the shower comes
with a tub bench.
>>CARTFIELD: out of a the room that got a space in the hall while in the kitchen; you
looked up under the sink, I can wash the dishes right there.
>>ANNOUNCER2: The program is based at U S M Institute for Disability Studies is made
up of housing groups, Financial Institutions and Disability Organizations from across Mississippi
to help those with disabilities buy their 1st home. Cassidy Hicks who's the program's
financial Coordinator says Home of Your Own fulfills the dreams of the disabled to own
their own homes.
>>CASSIE HICKS: This is something today because we have work at the partnership at the USDA
your Housing and also Jackson County Supervisor to help him with his home today.
>>ANNOUNCER2: As for Eric; he's just glad the program is there so he can now have his
own home to come home to.
>>CASSIE HICKS: Hattiesburg Home Depot; House Check Home Inspections.
>>ANNOUNCER3: Forrest County Family was given a special housewarming today; Harvey and Virginia
more lost their home during Hurricane Katrina 2 1/2 years ago.
Today thanks to volunteers at service organizations they got keys to a brand new home. The project
was lead by the Southern Miss Institute for Disability Studies and a Christian Missions
group from up in Canada.
>>VARNADO: Here from Ontario Canada; they have been here from the last month, and they
have started the house, and they finished the house. and so; this is a home now that
the Moores will have to occupy at no cost to them.
>>ANNOUNCER3: Also helping build and dedicated the home were Catholic Charities Red Cross
and The United Methodists.
>>ANNOUNCER4: Well; it is June 1st, today it marks the beginning of National Home Ownership
month. This morning at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Jackson Housing
Authority kicked things off with a 2011 Home Ownership in Affordable Housing Ralley in
the number of the Ownership Advocates attended the event; it was held at the State Capitol.
They gathered to encourage the Public to keep the American Dream of owning a home alive.
>>ADAMS: Communities need people to have strength of taking ownership where they live and Home
Ownership allows them to be able to do that. They feel a vested interest. It also helps
the communities where they live to expand their housing stock and their tax bases at
the same time.
>>ANNOUNCER4: The Jackson Housing Authority will host a number of workshops of few are
listed right there on your screen.
As part of the National Home Awarness Month; The IDS is getting a word out on the Resources
for People with Disabilities to purchase a home. Ashley Connor will join us on that,
Ashley.
>>ANNOUNCER5: Well Howard, the program is called the home of your own program since
they begin; they helped over 370 people's statewide buy a house. And for one happy homeowner;
here's thrilled for this program how to achieve his goal. 27 year old
Michael Miller is doing normally he does on a day off, enjoying time at his house
while researching on his computer and catching up on his favorite Television shows.
>>MILLER: I like being on the computer, like visiting friends, singing in the choir, going
to the movies, shopping.
>>ANNOUNCER5: Another of Miller's favorite past times is photography. Here, he and
his mother Shirley Miller are sorting through Family Reunion Photos. Miller says her
son has a Learning Language Disability but is very Independent. When he approach her
about buying a house she knew he was ready.
>>MILLER's MOM: He ask me how much rent was? I said about 6 - 700 dollars depending on
where you live. He said; I can buy a house. Yeah; you could!
>>ANNOUNCER5: Miller like many folks with a disability chose to get help through a statewide
home of your own program. Housing Counselor; Nita Martin, have said; they help people from
start to finish with anything from how to manage your money choosing a realitor and
a mortgage broker.
>>MARTIN: A lot of individuals are not aware of types of mortgage products that may be
available to help them achieving Home Ownership.
>>ANNOUNCER5: This is Micahel's house, purchasing the home of 2009. He saved to buy his house
for 3 years. Since then, he said; he has a whole new found independance.
>>MILLER: Recommend the home of your own program; it makes me feel like an adult and I can do
anything.
>>ANNOUNCER5: For many; Martin says, this program is not only about buying a home.
>>MARTIN: As they finish my program; they become home owners and have a great sense
of Pride and Confidence in themselves.

>>ANNOUNCER7: Good Tuesday Afternoon! Thanks for joining us at mid-day and I'm Katrina
Reagan. There are two housing programs through the Institute for Disability Studies that
we want to tell you about at Midday, They are available, here in the Capitol City for
potential home owners and joining me today are Cassie Hicks and Ron Hill to tell us what
those two programs are really all about. Well, the capitol City is making strides to help
people becoming home owners through different two types of programs that are availabe. Now
one is the City of Jackson Home Investment Partnership
Program and this particular project helps people with a disabilities and families who
have a family member with a disability living with them finding a affordable perminent homes.
And the other project we want to share with you centers around what is known as the Neighborhood
Stablization Program or N S P. This was created to reshape with Communities plagued by rundown
houses and are foreclosure for that matter. And Cassie Hicks, is Coordinator for Housing
initiatives for I D S. Ron Hill is Project Coordinator for the Neighborhood stablization
program. They are now here to break down the differences between these two projects and
tells us more about them. Thanks so much for being here! Ron, let's go ahead and start
with you. Do individuals interested in purchasing a N S P house have to be a person with a Disability
or do they have to have a family member with a Disability?
>>RON: No; they don't have to have a personal disability living within the home. Of course;
we do specialize with disabilities. But in regard to the NSP program; they do not have
to have a disability in order to purchase a home. There are some other qualifiction
that are required and those will be on our website and they can actually go there and
look at those later.
>>ANNOUNCER7: Okay; now, how can people interested in an I D S N S P House actually seeing the
houses that are available.
>>RON: Well there are 2 ways: they can call at the office or they can go through our website,
once they go to the website, they can see the houses that are available. They also can
see the other qualifications that are going to be required in order to purchase a home
on the N S P Program.
>>ANNOUNCER7: Okay; Cassie, let's bring you in here. How long has I D S has been administrating
at home ownership partnership programs with City of Jackson?
>>CASSIE: This is an objective that have been started in 2002. Since then, we have helped
65 home owners get housing in Jackson under that particular program working with the University
of Southern Mississippi.
>>ANNOUNCER7: And how do you do that? I mean you know through Habitat for Humanity and
other programs but specifically how do you do that?
>>CASSIE: It's actually through the Home of Your Own programs that was created in 1997,
The University of Soutehrn Mississippi at the Institute and what we do is working
with Comprehensive Counseling sessions on how to maintain home ownership and help them
get renaisance helping with the documents up to
$15,000 per household.
>>ANNOUNCER7: Okay now; you briefly mentioned U S M I know they got the actual funds to
start this program. They have a Satellite Campus here in Jackson as
well as in Gulfport. The one here in Jackson; actually targets 5 different neighborhoods.
Can you tell us what neighborhoods these are?
>>CASSIE: The NSP programs that Ronn does is listed with us in the city.
>>ANNOUNCER7: West Jackson is what I believed, North Jackson was another, but I can't remember
right off the bat; Mid-town I think was the 3rd. What about the other two?
>>RONN: We have the Fair Steet historic distric and of course; we have South and West Jackson
are basically required with two different areas. Altar Woods will be the 1st, Of Course;
you mentioned North Jackson already.
>>ANNOUNCER7: Let's bring back Habitat for a minute because I read they actually partner
with you guys sometime to help you with those houses I believe I have on the press release.
>>CASSIE: Well no, the habitat they have home owners they were refered to us trying as actually
where this comes in. Okay; we give in home buyer education to those home owners. We have
an upcoming class in June that we will be giving our home education house to the Public
that we invited to the [Edmunds] Library for the event in June.
>>ANNOUNCER7: And Cassie; this program really is very important for people.
>>CASSIE: It is. It gives them a reason have home ownership; how to be included in the
community. I D S is all about Community Conclusion with a person with Disabilities into housing
with home ownerships and they can be proud owners.[ ]
