I'm Jonathan Ayres with Network For Success and today we are going to talk about what
is the average price of a mechanical mouse? Well I guess the first question always is
what is a mechanical mouse? There are different types of mice available for operating the
cursor on your computer nowadays and the most common is an optical mouse. However, mechanical
mice still abound and I have one right here in front of me. This is a Logic Tech Brand
and I want to show you what makes a mechanical mouse the way it is. It has a ball on the
bottom inside of a cage and that's what moves your cursor around the screen is the movement
of this ball and you typically have to have a mouse pad for them to operate correctly
which is why the industry has moved over to optical mice because they don't have to have
any requirement for requiring a mouse pad and they pretty much operate anywhere but
this is an old timey typical mechanical mouse. They run about $4.95 today and sometimes they're
cheaper. They're usually thrown in with most computers when you buy one they have a mouse
and a keyboard and otherwise it is about the same. It has two buttons on the top with a
scroll wheel in the middle to allow you to scroll up and down pages when you are surfing
or reading an article and then the last thing you need to know about is how does a mechanical
mouse connect and the most common connection actually is this type of connection which
is a PS2 connection and these are old fashioned, in fact you probably don't find them on computers
any more but really what you are looking for is a USB connection and the USB connection
is where you would get on a modern mechanical mouse. I don't think they sell these PS2's
regularly, you can probably find one just by asking, but it's probably not the most
common item. So once again a mechanical mouse is a mouse that is not optical. It has moving
parts in it like this ball in the bottom and this ball on the bottom can collect dust and
other detritus and then you have to open it up and clean it and take the ball out otherwise
it doesn't want to operate properly. As you can see the ball comes right out and you can
blow in there and fool around and get it all clean and put it back in and then your mouse
will operate properly again but they don't operate well if you don't have a mouse pad
so it is the less expensive alternative to the mouse but I don't think it is quite as
good because it doesn't operate on all surfaces.
