Welcome to the Master in Biology
and Plant Biotechnology.
The aim of this master of one year
year is the training of professional researchers
in all fields of biology of plants and fungi.
50% of the training activities
are conducted in classrooms and laboratories
of the Biosciences faculty at UAB.
The rest of the time, almost half a year,
students are fully incorporated in the research
of different institutions and companies.
This short video will give some examples of these
activities carried out by our students.
For this, we come to this beautiful place,
the Botanical Garden Mar i Murtra
which is collaborating in one of the international
projects of the Plant Physiology Unit of the UAB.
In this project works Sílvia Busoms, master student
and fellow of the U.S. National Institute of Health.
First, is to say that the Arabidopsis
plant is self-fecundating.
This is often an advantage,
but by other hand,
as when we are looking at the genetic variability,
is a problem.
So what do we make is take advantage
of the variability present in wild populations,
such as these that appear in this garden.
Thus we can determine the genetic variability
that is adapted to local environments,
as is the case of saline environment.
Here in the greenhouse we have different genotypes
growing in a common and saline substrate
to compare among them.
Outside, we also planted different genotypes,
the coastal and inland,
that were distributed randomly in a plot.
What we do is measure growth
number of leaves, survival, seed number...
We also take leaf samples for ionomic analysis
in order to know its sodium content.
