John Walls: It seemed like just another routine day of school for Tyler Creswell and David Beckley
from Canton Ohio. A couple of Junior High Schoolers waiting at the bus stop
The bus hadn't shown up yet, they looked down the street
and immediately, when they saw smoke
they knew there was a big problem.
David Beckley: We look up and we see this porch that was halfway on fire
and so, we immediately threw our bags and coats off. We ran down to the
house to see if we could find address on the porch
and so I looked out, got out my phone and
called 9-1-1
Walls: So David and Tyler had called 9-1-1
they knew help was on the way, but they also
knew there were two people inside that house and somehow they had to get them out
there was an edelerly person, her son lived there
So, what we did is we went around back
the front half was on fire and we took a few steps in the back door into the
kitchen and helped them get out
and all the firemen were surprised, because they said they wouldn't have gone
in without fire fighting equipment
so everybody was safe and sound, great news there in Canton.
What did Tyler and David do with the rest of their day?
Well, it was a school day. The bus showed up at the stop and they got on
and headed off to school, right on time
Beckley: We had to leave to get on the bus
So we helped them get out, got our stuff and got on the bus
then halfway through the school day we were in class and then we got a call
to go down to the office. We both thought we both did something
and here it is, the news stations were coming to interview us.
Walls: This was a great lesson learned for both David and Tyler and all of their friends there in Canton
and for David, he says the message was driven home
always keep that phone on you, because you never know when you might need it next
Beckley: I still think if something were to happen I could still easily pull out my phone
and call in help, and then we can help
or even if we're driving down the highway and see a house on fire
we can call then or
do whatever we need to do to help
