With rising concerns about a looming power shortage this summer after the shutdown of
some nuclear reactors here in Korea, more focus is turning to how to cut energy consumption
across the country.
Some have found a solution in the very buildings we live in.
Our Lee Ji-yoon has more. This apartment complex in Gyeonggi Province is constructed to conserve
energy by using solar and geothermal technology.
With some 1-thousand households within this complex, every apartment building here is
equipped with solar panels on its roof.
Those solar panels generate around 10-thousand kilowatts of electricity per month, helping
to significantly lower electricity costs.
"Using solar panels to lower electricity costs is definitely a good thing for those of us
living in this apartment."
The Korea Land and Housing Corporation has been constructing more and more of these energy-saving
apartments in response to electricity shortages and rise of oil prices over the past few years.
And such transition to solar power has helped apartments like these to keep the use of energy
and maintenance costs low.
The Korean government has also encouraged construction companies to build energy-saving
apartments, which has proven to not only reduce electricity costs but also provide efficient
heating and cooling.
"Using solar panels and renewable energy helps to reduce apartment maintenance fees for residents
and cut down on carbon emissions."
More apartments in Korea have been embracing energy efficient measures to reduce costs
and improve the comfort of residents.
Not only are they building residences with solar panels,. they are also upgrading their
apartment temperature controls, installing new energy efficient windows and sliding doors.
