Hey youtubers it’s Charlie and now that we’ve all had a chance to see the Coven
finale we can start talking about how everything went down and next season which is going back
to the 1950s.
So let’s talk about our top 5 favorite moments, then I’ll do my review and we can discussify
what we think of all the season 4 news so far. Careful for spoilers if you haven’t
seen the episode yet.
Number 5 - Stevie Nicks Music Video. I’m not a fan of stevie nicks, but having that
music video in the episode was so weird that I have to give them props for trying. There
was a cat too. I don’t ever remember seeing a cat in that house.
I kept wondering why they used stevie this season, in the pantheon of guest stars the
axeman still reigns supreme. But this dream-state montage was such a big deal I felt like I
had to put it on the list.
Number 4 - The Axeman’s Bargain. One person’s heaven is another person’s hell. The catfish
introduction of the axeman in hell was a bit misleading because there was so much warm
light pouring in. When we saw queenie’s hell the colors were so desaturated that there
was no doubt you were in a bad place.
I think the cabin was just meant to represent the axeman’s heaven even though they were
both in hell. The interesting thing is that their spirits were co-existing in that scenario.
The show was kind of fuzzy on that detail.
You would think that each character would experience hell in their own subjective way.
So everyone would be interacting with different versions of each other. I guess papa legba
had control over whether or not people’s souls could interact. as we saw when angela
bassett and kathy bates were both stuck in the attic torture chamber.
The bargain I think was that the axeman and Fiona would spend eternity together. And legba
was making sure she upheld the contract.
Number 3 - Myrtle’s untimely demise. I really liked how much bigger Frances Conroy’s part
was this season. Last season she was the angel of death and this season she just kept dying.
I tuned a lot of her out just because she was so over the top ridiculous even for american
horror story, but you can’t deny that she had the best death in the episode.
It was very noble of her to demand the traditional punishment for her crimes against the other
witches. But did she really have to be burned alive? Couldn’t they have just broken her
neck first?
Number 2 - The Seven wonders montage. In a montage heavy episode, this one was the most
exciting. The entire season had been teasing the seven wonders and as much fun as it was
watching Madison and Zoe puppetmaster kyle around the best part was Kyle’s revenge.
I bet she was a really terrible actress.
Number 1 - The one true supreme. Who else was surprised that it wasn’t one of the
girls. Last week one of my predictions was that it was someone else, but I didn’t predict
cordelia. So I was really happy to be surprised. Her final moments with Fiona were a really
good book-end to their nightmare relationship.
I love that Fiona basically told Cordelia that it was her own fault for not realizing
that She did love her, just not in the way she wanted. It’s just her owning the fact
that she’s so awful.
Who else laughed a little when she said all the hate wasn’t personal. It’s just that
Cordelia started sucking her power the minute she was born. That’s going to take some
therapy to process.
I was so happy that they didn’t kill Fiona off screen though. Jessica Lange was so good
this season and such a big character that she deserved to die in the same room as the
Honorable mention goes to that final moment when the new student asks what a supreme is
and Cordelia’s face flickers. I took it to mean that she was acknowledging that she
just became the supreme and someone else just started sucking her power away.
The cycle begins anew.
Let me know what your favorite moment was, and were you satisfied with the way each of
the characters ended?
Overall I give the finale a B plus. I didn’t feel like there were any real stakes here.
Because it was an ensemble cast, there was no one single character to pour all your hopes
into. Originally I was rooting for Zoe, but then Queenie became so sympathetic and it
really split the focus of the show. I even liked Madison until the whole Kyle situation
went south and she went from bad to just pure evil.
On a show full of evil characters though I feel like my favorite was the axeman. II feel
like the only actors that had a chance against Danny Huston were Jessica Lange and Kathy
Bates though. Bates would really be my second favorite evil coven person.
My biggest criticism of the finale was the lack of a real climax. I really consider the
battle with the witch hunters to be the real climax of the season.
With that in mind, let me know who your favorite character this season was. My favorite evil
character was the axeman, but my favorite character overall is a tie between Madison
and Nan.
