After visiting Chinese universities it becomes very obvious that the barriers
that have stood in the way of meaningful collaboration between
Chinese universities and American universities are no longer there.
The information highway, the transfer of information
is almost instantaneous now.
So you can walk into a Chinese laboratory and on their desktop
will be
the article that you've published last week or the article that you published last month.
Five years ago we had the advantage, I think, of
of having the scientific information
and there would be a time lag between when
the scientific information would come out
in American journals or international journals
until they would receive this information.
But of course we have more of a horizontal
environment now where this transfer of information is almost instantaneous
so
you can walk into a Chinese university laboratory
and unless you look out the window you would think you're in the United States or you
would think you're in any laboratory
in the United States.
They have state-of-the-art equipment. They have that individual faculty members
who are doing
contract work with Nike to develop new badminton shoes
which again the market in the United States might be small but the world
wide market would be huge.
And it's just this whole idea of
these barriers - this information barrier - that once existed, just doesn't
exist anymore.
So
the opportunities I think for Indiana University to collaborate
is - the time is right for that kind of opportunity because we are on equal ground
and I think we will
in short order I think we will come up with some remarkable collaborations and advances
in
and what we know about health and wellness.
