Just when you think you're making good decisions at the supermarket, you actually might be
walking into a sugar trap.
The usual suspects – like soft drinks, candy and baked goods – aren't the only foods
that give you a sugar high. The truth is, a lot of foods you wouldn't necessarily think
of as “sweet” are packed with hidden sugars disguised under names like corn syrup, dextrose,
fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose and more.
Each gram of added sugar contains four empty calories, which can be stored as fat and ultimately
lead to a number of diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. But you can break
away from hidden sugars one small, sweet step at a time.
A great place to start? Prep more of your own foods at home, where you control how much
sugar goes in.
Here are some other delicious ideas:
Scrutinize all food labels, especially the ones where you least expect to find added
sugars like sauces and dressings. Pasta sauces, BBQ sauces, ketchup, and even some salad dressings
are full of the stuff.
Remember that high fructose corn syrup, dextrin, dextrose or any other word ending in “–ose”
is just another form of sugar.
Don't be fooled by healthy-sounding foods. Some breakfast cereals, iced tea and sports
drinks are loaded with sugar.
Here’s another delicious tip: Top plain, unsweetened, Greek yogurts with fruit.
Now that’s sweet advice!
