ANNOUNCER: From our community to yours...
WOMAN: I'm Linda Blackwell for Accessible Media.
For some, winter can be a miserable and bleak affair;
just long periods of darkness and cold.
But if you live in the rocky mountain town of Banff, Alberta
you celebrate winter with a month-long festival
called SnowDays.
MAN: Here we go, Brianna.
BLACKWELL: Five-year-old Brianna Aldea
is trying snowboarding for the very first time.
She's here with her family from Calgary,
and after a couple of runs, she gave me some pointers.
BRIANNA: Standing up straight,
and you have to look where you're going.
And have fun.
BLACKWELL: The big three Slide and Ride
is a cooperative of Mt. Norquay, Lake Louise,
and Sunshine Ski areas.
Anyone can try snowboarding or skiing
on a man-made slope for beginners,
with professional guides on hand to teach the basics.
Wendy Kerr is the Event Organizer.
Everything that the resorts have to offer on the big mountain,
we brought here to Central Park.
And to our little mountain to give everyone
the opportunity to try it out before they go out there.
BLACKWELL: When we think of winter activities,
we think of snowmobiling, tobogganing,
or cross country skiing,
but how about Nordic walking?
Mandy Johnson is the Alberta Ambassador
for urban pulling.
So, Linda, you can see that when you walk with poles,
it's great for people with mobility issues,
or like you mentioned that you have MS.
So there's some issues with stability and balance.
This is like four-wheel drive for humans;
you've got much more stability and balance
when you walk with the poles.
BLACKWELL: Mountains of snow,
and fun-filled activities are what SnowDays and winter
in Banff National Park are all about.
So let's enjoy winter,
for soon it will be spring.
Yay!
For Accessible Media, I'm Linda Blackwell.
