The purpose of this web briefing from the National Weather Service in Glasgow, Montana
is to inform you of an upcoming winter storm that will impact much of Northeast Montana
tonight April 7th, into Monday April 8th. An upper level low pressure system over the
Pacific Northwest has caused ample moisture to build into south-central Montana this afternoon,
as depicted by this water vapor image and the green arrow on your screen.
Arctic high pressure will slide southward out of Canada tonight at the same time a surface
low pressure system develops over southern Montana. This collision of airmasses will
drive heavy precipitation and gusty northerly winds tonight into Monday. Precip type will
start out as rain this evening…but will quickly change over to all snow as the arctic
air builds in. Confidence in this forecast is high at this time.
Greater than 6 inches of snow is expected across southern Petroleum, southern Garfield,
and western Prairie counties. 3 to 6 inches of snow is possible south of the Missouri
River and over southern Phillips and Valley counties. Areas further north will see lesser
amounts of up to 2 to 3 inches. Central and southern Phillips, Petroleum,
and Garfield counties are in a Winter Storm Warning from 9 PM this evening through 6 PM
Monday. McCone, Richland, Dawson, Prairie, and Wibaux
counties are in a Winter Storm Warning from midnight tonight through 6 PM Monday.
Southern and Central Valley and Roosevelt counties are in a Winter Weather Advisory
from midnight tonight through 6 PM Monday.
Expected impacts are that cold and wet conditions will stress newborn and young livestock. Gusty
north winds will cause blowing and drifting of snow. Significant travel impacts are possible
as roads become inundated with snow. This concludes the web briefing. If you have
