My name is Marie Holmes I am a team leader paramedic and I work for the north east ambulance
service. Working with the clinicians has been a great benefit it's actually cut down the
inappropriate calls we have received, it's also cut down the persistent callers that
we are called to on a day to day basis, it's been very beneficial.
I don't think it has helped paramedics decrease their work load, what it has done is help
paramedics to be dispatched to appropriate calls rather than the inappropriate calls
because they work closely with the clinicians of NHS pathways. Using the NHS pathways questions
the clinicians go through those questions and it has helped make the decision whether
these persistent callers actually need an ambulance or they don't, It has made a big
massive... speaking to the paramedics involved a decrease in inappropriate calls we have
seen a fall.
I think the top tip would really be for operations and communications to work very closely together,
also take into consideration call connect running alongside the NHS pathways. I think
the clinical benefits of using NHS pathways it's more appropriate for the patient and
it's more appropriate for the NHS resources, casualties aren’t being bombarded with patients
who shouldn't be there and patients are getting to see who they should see more quickly. We
have found using NHS pathways very beneficial in our day to day role
