Departmental honors has been a great experience for me.
I've gotten to do many things that other students wouldn't,
like present my research at a national conference.
In fact I presented my research at two national conferences.
I have also gotten to work one-on-one with several
faculty members in close contact.
My faculty advisor has been my advisor for four years and
I've done intense research with her.
And this has kind of helped to guide what I plan to do
for the future.
I feel that doing departmental honors has really given me a
leg up on my competition when going into graduate school.
Most other incoming graduate students have not had to do an
intensive project like what departmental honors requires
and thus many of the faculty members look upon that
as a great attribute.
Another great thing is that the core classes that are required
for departmental honors vary from department to department
but they all stem around your major.
I would encourage anyone who was thinking about doing research or
thinking about going into graduate school or getting a job
after graduation to either participate in departmental
honors or if your department does not offer it to find some
type of experience like this.
