As the cool of an August morning drifts over a new risen day
an optimistic sense has awakened to smell the roses
gets many of us to arise from our beds
preparing for the day ahead. But, for few others smelling the roses
is no metaphor, but a desire that fuels not only
their daily routines but life in it's most glorious reflection.
Ryan Jarvis is one of these few.
Like the roses he tends for, the twenty-two year old Nevadan
has adapted to the colorful environment that surrounds him
and flourishes with every breathing moment of the day.
He is really knowledgable, more so than a lot of my students
because he wants to learn. So, if anything I can say about Ryan
is the fact that he has built himself into a knowledgable person
And wants to learn more and more. He strives to learn.
Carrying for roses is believed to be an art form
It is an art form that takes great patience and extreme attention to detail
What makes me unique is probably how I am able to learn really quickly.
And also, listen to instructions.
I'm able to maintain roses and also prune them.
I also know when to plant them.
Unlike other jobs, these instructions are not simple everyday annoyances
But every one can mean the life and death of each rose
Ryan has quickly developed an eye for detection
of diseases, destructful insects, and how to work individually
with each various type of rose.
Powdery mildew, black spot, and rust.
Those are the three most common diseases
Then there is mosaic virus, which we did spot.
Roses are particular plants. They're pretty picky.
It's studying their habits of growth. That's probably the most important thing.
Learning to understand roses is a challenge for anyone.
Requiring a tireless work ethic in order to grow and survive
as a caretaker of these eternally adored flowers.
He wants to give at least a hundred-ten percent to two-hundred percent
on any job. I totally recommend him for any type of business in horticulture.
I had Ryan in my greenhouse lab
and he was just outstanding and actually I gave him an award
from the school for his outstanding performance in the greenhouse.
So, he does other things besides roses.
So, that's what I want to say.
If I was an employer looking for somebody that is dependable,
that's reliable, and knows what he is doing once you train him
and who listens to directions, I would surely hire Ryan.
With an incredible craving to learn and an unperishable love
for roses that touches every prickly thorn and each blossoming petal
Ryan Jarvis has opened his gift to the world.
Blossoming into a man who has found his passion in each flourishing rose
and beating heart he has encountered.
I am capable of a lot of things.
And I learn to actually, like I always questioned if I was
a jack of all trades, but from doing this job actually helped answer that question.
This project would not be possible without
