Hi, my name is Andrew Luchsinger, Technical Marketing Manager at IDT. I'd like to introduce
the 4H series of performance MEMS oscillators. These oscillators join our 4M and 4E series,
but offer ultra low jitter, frequency margining capability, and our smallest package options.
The 4H series offers ultra low phase jitter at less than 300fs in the full 12kHz to 20MHz
integration range, and down to 100fs typical in the 1.875MHz to 20MHz range, which is most
applicable to high speed networking applications such as ten-gigabit Ethernet. It includes
frequency margining capability to adjust the frequency on the fly by plus or minus 1,000
ppm. It's offered in any frequency between 50MHz to 625MHz. It's offered with an LVDS
or LVPECL output, and 2.5 or 3.3 volt operation. It's offered in plus or minus 25ppm or plus
or minus 50ppm frequency stability with an output enable and operates over the full industrial
temperature range of negative 40 to 85 degrees C. The device comes in three package options,
including 7.0 x 5.0mm, 5.0 x 3.2mm, going down to the smallest, 3.2 x 2.5mm. As a MEMS
based oscillator, the 4H series provides 40 times better reliability than quartz, with
no activity dips, no zero time failures, jitter resistance to EMI, and excellent shock and
vibration resistance. IDT is the first company to offer this level of performance, reliability,
and small package size.
They key benefits of the 4H series include ultra low phase jitter that results in a lower
bit error rate in high speed networking and communications applications. Integrated frequency
margining capability allows the user to generate hundreds of offset frequencies on the fly.
Known in the industry as plus ppm tuning, customers can achieve a lower bit error rate
by slightly increasing the output frequency. IDT's device allows this to be done by simply
toggling one of the pins. Frequency margining is also an invaluable tool for margin testing.
As mentioned before, our MEMS products offer 40 times better reliability than quartz, and
leverage batch semiconductor manufacturing. Because there's no quartz, there are no production
shortages, eliminating the need for inventory stocking and management and enables just-in-time
manufacturing. Because our devices are offered in standard, low cost molded plastic packaging
and leverage a semiconductor manufacturing process, MEMS devices generally offer cost
savings over quartz based devices. Our compact, 3.2 x 2.5mm package helps save valuable board
space.
The 4H series is optimized for ten-gigabit E and 40-gigabit E applications, including
routers and switches, storage clusters, networking, and industrial applications. However, the
feature's performance and reliability make this an ideal solution for many LVDS or LVPECL
applications.
