Hi
Today more than ever we hear about freedom,
rights, possibilities.
But we are more confused!
What do you think
is this so controversial freedom?
Certainly one of the virtues
of modern times
is the dimension of risk.
Now, risk is an ambiguous word
because it can contain,
somehow, the exposition to a gamble,
the exposition to a sort of
trial of destiny,
and so something that makes
the man again a kind of heir
heir of the prometheic gesture.
But risk also contains
again another dimension,
it means, it contains the assumption of responsibility.
I risk my responsibility,
I take it until I risk it.
And this is a strong act,
in a weak society,
is a strong act, in a fluctuating society.
It's an act that reproduces and suggests again,
especially at the center of it,
the most important risk,
which I would call the risk of freedom.
Freedom is one of those inheritances
that the man brings with him
and which can produce the best
or the worst of him.
It's the freedom to chose,
of being able to be,
or being able to be not.
It's the freedom of being able
to do good and to do bad.
It's the freedom of good,
but also the freedom of bad,
that bad which today
is so widespread as it's banal.
So the risk of freedom,
it means the capacity of man
to find inside of himself,
how can I say
the fact of being,
of living this condition of traveler,
between the place where he comes from
to the place where he is walking to.
Here the exodus ends,
the exodus of man,
the man who,
the moment he understands
that he has been exiled,
he doesn't get lost,
he doesn't go astray,
but he follows the polar star,
he follows his own polar star
which is not a truth,
which is the responsibility
that the freedom has been given
to him forces him to take.
This ethic responsibility,
so I'm talking about returning inside
the area of worries
about the reasoning of man,
of his ethical dimension.
Ethics, don't not forget it,
means ethos, means oikos,
means hetairos,
so it means taking care of the home,
taking care of the house,
taking care of friends,
of the traveling companion.
Freedom has to express
in the self-care,
in the care of the other,
in the care of the common home.
We see, that if we would be able
to put these three things together,
we would surely have a better world.
