Hello viewers!
In this video,I'll show you how to synthesize nitric acid.
this method deal with highly corrosive gasses,so this experiment must be conducted outdoor or in a fume hood
the key is to have a well ventilated area
First, add 80g of ammonium nitrate to pre-chilled 100ml sulphuric acid
sulphuric acid will not all
dissolve ammonium nitrate
that's fine
ammonium nitrate will dissolve during the distillation
then set a simple distillation setup as shown
at the beginning of the distillation, use low flame to
heat the distillation flask
this will decrease the formation of nitrogen dioxide
which formed
from decomposition of nitric acid
when ammonium nitrate and sulphuric acid mixture start to boil
and fumes start to come out from
the condenser,
use moderate flame as the heat source.
when nitric acid is boiled,
we can see the formation of the condensation ring
which is formed when hot vapour condenseding at the surface of the condenser
keep the condensation ring halfway of the condenser or less
otherwise, you might loss some of the acid or harm yourself
when the condensation ring
and fumes from the condenser disappear
stop the distillation
here is
the close-up of the condensation ring, beautiful isn't it?
here is the fuming nitric acid we get
it is a clear liquid with a slightly yellow tinge
we can test the nitric acid with copper metal
just drop some copper in it,it will generate nitrogen dioxide
and produce copper(II) nitrate
