What's up guys, this is Nick from eFISHent Angling
uh...Andrew and I took the day to come out to the coast. All of our bass lakes are totally destroyed, muddy.
So, we said we've got to get out and fish for something. So we cruised over the hill. uh...
We're in Salinas right now. We're surfperch fishing. uh...Conditions aren't ideal but,
we decided to give it a shot anyway and we still managed to catch a couple fish.
So we figured now would be a good time to talk to you guys about uh.. just the technique and
how to do this. It's a super easy fishery and almost anyone can come out here and have a great day.
So first we're going to talk a little
bit about the rods and reels that you're going to need for this kind of fishing. Super simple most people already have this stuff lying around. uh...
This is just a six and a half foot medium action spinning rod um...spooled up with six or eight pound test.
Something that you'd use for ya know...
light duty bass fishing or trout fishing. It works great for this perch stuff. uh.. You don't have to go buy another rod to do it. It' just a really simple set up. uh... if you wanted to get a little more serious with it and, you know, get a rod
dedicated to this kind of fishing
um I'd recommend something like this. This is a
Eight and a half foot
steelhead rod, medium action, rated for six to twelve pound line. uh... I've got a 4000 size reel on here spooled up with eight or ten pound test this is monofilament
some guys like to use braided line
uh... I just like monofilament
it's easier to work with and
it's just a personal preference. Uh... getting into the terminal setup, it's really simple.
It's your basic Carolina Rig. Looks something like this:
You've got a sliding sinker
on your main line, a bead
also on the main line
a small crane swivel tied on there,
to stop the bead and the weight
and then on the other side of the swivel
we've got about a foot and a half to two foot leader
with a number six bait holder hook.
uh... some guys like to use a four,
I go with a six, personal preference.
As for the bait,
this is a uh... a bait that's gotten really popular in the last couple years.
It's a product made by Berkley
It's called a Gulp! Sandworm
These come in a package and they look just like a pile work,
which is a really great bait for surfperch. These work really really well, you can just cast it out
And you don't even really need to move it, there's enough scents and stuff in this guy where they'll just hit it sitting still
a slow retrieve usually works best.
Another option for lures, or baits rather
is this guy, this is what they call
a motor oil grub
This one happens to be made by Big Hammer
but there's a couple other brands...Kalin's makes one that's really
popular.
When you hear people talk about motor oil grubs and that's what this is.
"motor oil" refers to the color,
but it's just a little one or two inch grub.
it's on that same number six hook.
You can just cast these out and
on a slow retrieve
they work really well for Surfperch.
That about covers it for what you're going to need for rods and tackle.
All right now let's take a look at actually how you're going to fish these things.... So, we're out on the beach now, you've got your perch rod, or whatever you've decided to use, we've got our Carolina rig set up. Number six hook and our little Gulp! Sandworm. We're going to show you how to fish this now. Super simple guys, you're just going to make a nice long cast, wind up the slack line, feel the weight is on the bottom. We're just going to start a slow retrieve back. Nothing fancy, you don't really have to twitch the rod or anything, just a slow steady retrieve. Sometimes we kind of like to bob it and just let it hold in the current and just kind of keep the line tight. As the weight's washing in, keep winding up the slack. Sometimes you have to wind kind of fast so that the waves don't catch your line. That's it. You're just going to walk the beach. You're going to try and find schools of fish, generally when you find one there should be other ones close by.
So you just wanna walk the beach and
when you get into fish, keep casting and hopefully you'll catch a bunch.
