ScienceBase Catalog Training Video #2 – Searching the Catalog
Screen #1: Video title/cover fade to ScienceBase Catalog main page
In the last ScienceBase training video, we learned how to browse through large collections
of items based on certain criteria. However if we want to find records related to a specific
theme or idea very quickly, it’s easier to search.
Let’s try to search ScienceBase Catalog. Imagine you are a researcher and you are considering
a new project studying the Yampa River basin in northern Colorado.
The first step is to discover what resources are available concerning this subject. From
the ScienceBase Catalog main page, click in the search bar and type Yampa PH.
Screen #2: ScienceBase search results
When you click search or press enter, ScienceBase Catalog returns the results of your search.
The results are listed in a panel on the center of the screen and the world map has automatically
adjusted to show the spatially located records.
Let’s check out some of these results. Each result is shown as a title, an abbreviated
abstract, the item category, and the tags/topics associated with the record. If you want to
see the geospatial location of the items just hover your cursor over either the record title
or the blue dots on the map. Hover your cursor over the title beginning with “Evaluation
of trends in pH…” This will highlight the relationship.
Some items do not have a location or geospatial footprint. If you hover your mouse over the
title beginning with “Selected hydrologic data…” You will notice how there is no
geospatial location assigned to this item.
In this video, we learned how to search the ScienceBase Catalog to find an item of interest,
review the metadata, and navigate the search results.
Screen #3: Fade to Science Base home page URL portrayed against a grey background
In the next video, we will explore how to access records more fully and determine where
all information about an item can be found.
