Today's topic is, to put it simply
'boys and girls'
We're in Borsod, where the dr. Ámbédkár School
has four school buildings in the county
It won't be an ordinary lesson
instead, Amnesty Hungary's trainers have come here..
Where we are now is Sáta
the dr. Ámbédkár School has an elementary school here.
I'm going to draw here, for the boys
and Zsuzsi will draw there, for the girls
two circles
I'm going to label one as 'boys'
the other as 'girls'
What are the typically 'boy' things in life
and what are the typically 'girl' things
So if you find something that could be both
then put it in the middle.
We are a Buddhist school
We are named after dr. Ambedkar
a dalit 'untouchable', or 'without a caste'
and he wrote India's constitution
Similarly to the dalits in India...
The Romas are in a similar position in Hungary
As in, they aren't provided with the same opportunities
for inclusion
they don't have examples on how to do that
By all means, they needed help
just like Ambedkar needed help to achieve
what he did.
It's characteristic of all Hungarian schools
that there are many gaps in the human rights education
Partly because even the teachers aren't well-versed in it
So you agree that caring for the children
is the woman's job?
No, I don't agree with that
because I think it can be shared
What?
Well, raising the children, it's not just...
the other partner can take care of them just the same
In what way can you rely on a man in raising the children?
If the child doesnt't feel well, or something
he could ask them 'What's wrong, son?'
Or 'Dad, how do you do this?'
Or 'how do you do this?', exactly!
We believe that this kind of work empowers them
to stand up for their own interests
either as women, as young mothers
or as citizens undergoing a police identity check.
Being a Buddhist is not a requirement here
either for our teachers or our students
rather, it's the mentality that we inisist on.
We're not Buddhists
This is just a second chance school
For some, an umpteenth chance
I have gone to another school, too
Unfortunately, I was kicked out from there
What was the problem?
Well... What was the problem?
Well, my aggressiveness
They're more understanding here
And I've changed a lot, too
People change as they get older
If everyhing goes well,
I'd like to study to be a kindergarten teacher,
if it pans out
That's what I'd be more interested in
Though I'll have to change my grades for that
I've missed a lot of school recently, true
though I've changed that now
I've realised that school is very important
because you can't succeed without an education nowadays
You can't go far even with a high school diploma
but if you don't have that, then you won't be hired anywhere
And what if, even if the difference is small,
but the woman earns slightly more than the man?
That screws with the man's pride
and there's more conflict there
But let's ask the men:
what if you both work, and the woman earns slightly more?
And for example, what about those who have jobs
that has less pay?
It depends on the couple
For example, we work at similar companies,
I get around 70,000 and she gets 96,000
There's nothing wrong with that, because if they get along well...
... or his pay gets deducted?
Well basically I don't have a problem with that
That's what Ádám said, too
that he doesn't have a problem with the woman earning more
I consider it the highest achievement of the Ámbédkár School
that the students can form independent opinions, and not...
that we encourage them to stand up for themselves, for their opinions
What was surprising for me was that
there was already a kind of strong emancipatory attitude
among the girls
and that the boys seem to have accepted that.
I think it's already typical of today's world
that men and women
should almost be on the same level in every aspect
like work, housework, childcare, etc.
But this wasn't so in old times as women didn't work
they did the housework
took care of the family and so on
and the guys worked more
and they were waited on
so they went home, were waited on, but this has been overturned
and the problem here is that a guy expects
the woman to act according to the old ways
and maybe he doesn't work because he doesn't have a job
and then he just slacks off.
What one of the girls said was very important, I think
It went something like
"It used to be that men made all the decisions
but now women are burdened so much
that they simply must be shared
and there must be some kind of equality in this."
I'm turning 23, and I have a partner
He doesn't mind that I'm in school
He doesn't want me to be a kindergarten teacher
he wants me to go to the police academy
but that's not possible
I feel too young to have children
Sometimes I think that yes, I want them
but right now I'm focusing on continuing my studies
The Ámbédkár School operates as an association
because its church status was revoked.
Amnesty International Hungary operates as an association
So here two NGOs are using their own resources to further the cause
while the state supports the project with
a relatively minuscule sum, the normative,
although we all know
and every responsible expert knows
that if there isn't a meaningful investment into education in these areas
there will be very big problems in a few years.
