So my name's Andrew Shedden.
I studied an MBA at the RMIT Graduate School of
Business and Law.
I finished in 2010 and I now work for KPMG in their
management consulting practice as a senior consultant.
I think RMIT is a real practical university and the degree
that I did, an MBA is a really broad generalist degree.
That practical offering that RMIT gives, that hands on learning is what really
appealed to me.
I think it's a really good basis to get into the career
that i'm in now, management consulting.
So as soon as I left my RMIT MBA, I almost
launched straight into work with KPMG.
Reason being, it got to my last semester of the MBA.
I knew management consulting is where I wanted to go
so I went out of my way to try and speak to as many
people as I could from as many firms as I could.
I was having coffee's just about every week, just
trying to work out what firms did, what management
actually meant.
It's not so much about what you know, but who you know.
I know that one of the oldest cliches in the book, but I
think it's so true.
It's not even who you know right now, but who you
can get to know.
I went out of my way when I was still studying
to go and speak to as many people as I could.
When I was studying I had no idea really what management
consulting meant.
But I had as many conversations as I possibly could
and that really started to fill in the picture for me.
I spoke to all different firms and I landed on KPMG
because that was the culture I really wanted
to be a part of. They were working with the clients
that I wanted to work with and doing the types of work
that I wanted to do. So through those conversations
I ended up being lucky enough
to get an opportunity.
