We are hoping to have here a lot of people involved in the apiary.
I want students to be able to come with their significant others, and with their kids if they want to.
We are trying to reach as many people as possible.
So that's really our goal- to get the whole community involved in this project and to raise the awareness for bees.
I've gotten more involved in the apiary over the last couple of years, since Professor Fauvel brought it out here.
I didn't know a whole lot about it, but it's been fun being able to go out
in the apiary and see the bees and see what it's all about.
I not only help out here in Holland, but I have my own beehive at home.
Believe it or not I used to be terrified of
bees, and I'm still terrified of any other creepy crawly thing you can think of.
Once you get in the hive, it's sort of a love that you get for them.
The goals of the apiary is to teach students about beekeeping, and so now we are trying to teach younger and
newer generations the importance of the bees and see how they work and function as a colony.
Well also, the bees flew towards me. I was still a little bit scared, but I got over that,
and the most fun part of it was that I got to hold the frames and actually see the bees.
That was really fun, I really enjoyed it. I really had a nice time.
(laughing) It's interesting. I feel like a martian in a space suit.
I really like the outfit. It made me
feel like I was going to the moon. I really liked it. It made me feel safe.
I like it. It's kind of fun, you always see it on TV when people are going into the hives,
and it makes you feel a lot safer.
You go out you see kids scared of bees and running, and yes they'll sting you,
but they don't realize that they provide honey for the sweeteners that they like.
Part of my passion now is going out and tell people that there are a lot of misconceptions, and honey bees aren't as bad as people think they are.
Educating our younger generation is where we need to start.
Bees are extremely important and we're trying to make the public aware of that, and we're also trying to play
a part in keeping bees ourselves, and helping the resurgence for the interest in beekeeping.
It's been really great to see how it's changed our campus community and how the club has
really been able to get involved, and how they have been able to be on campus one night
bottling honey and it's really kind of fun to see how what they do really matches the
campus community as well as the campus commitment to sustainability.
We are the GVSU Meijer Campus and Holland Apiary,
and we want you to be more!
