People are constantly telling me take my breakfast, eat my lunch and finish my dinner. The thing
is, most of the time, I am not even hungry.
I know what you mean. People seem to think that you have to eat three square meals a
day, regardless of your metabolism level; and then there are those who advocate eating
five or six small meals a day.
It’s crazy right?
Yes, absolutely. Not everyone is average – some of us need less food, while others require
more.
Exactly. And this obsession with breakfast harkens back to the days when people were
farmers and hunters, who expend high energy levels due to the physical nature of their
work.
Right. What reason could there be to compel a 5’ 2” schoolgirl to consume a large
breakfast?
Biologically speaking, no other mammal in nature, or any other animal group for that
matter, follows a strict eating schedule.
Yes, even chimpanzees, who shares 99% of the human DNA, only eat when they are hungry.
Sometimes I wonder if our eating habits developed from commercial strategies of food companies.
That’s an interesting thought.
There is also the biological hunger signals factor to consider. Our bodies give signals,
like a growling stomach, when we are hungry so we know it needs nourishment.
It’s the same thing with sleeping. We sleep when our body becomes tired, not according
to schedule.
I agree. The fact is, the three-meals-a-day routine is just a tradition, one that has
been accepted as gospel truth.
Many will try to argue otherwise, pointing at studies. They are unaware that these so-called
studies normally follow a fad, and typically change their conclusions every few years.
In addition, consider people suffering from metabolic syndrome, hypoglycemia or hypothyroid
– eating by schedule instead of when hungry could affect their health.
I think we desperately need some common sense on the subject of eating.
Very true. We are not robots.
So, are you going to finish those fries?
