Welcome to SPI Supplies Video Resources
This video will show how to change the fiber on an SPI Supplies Fiber Head used on a Carbon
Coater module.
Upon completion of a carbon coating run, the chamber is back filled and the sample removed.
The fiber head should be placed aside to allow to cool.
After cooling, the remaining fiber thread should be removed. Using the 5/64 size Allen
wrench provided, loosen the two Allen screws and remove any remaining fiber material. While
a full cleaning of the head between runs is not necessary, cleaning off any loose material
will ensure that the next run will not be contaminated. Use an SPI Supplies Easy Duster
and lint free cloths to clean off the posts and shield.
The SPI Supplies Fiber head allows for the use of several types of carbon fiber. Most
commonly used is SPI Supplies part number 11431, which is a thicker fiber and deposits
a heavy coating on the sample surface. For thinner coatings on this system, SPI Supplies
11436 or 11433 can be used.
Taking a fiber length, secure it on one of the post ends, leaving a bit overhanging.
Then with the fiber pulled taut between the two posts, secure the other end of the fiber.
Be sure that the Allen screws are tight and the post caps are well tightened down on the
fiber thread. If the fiber is not firmly clamped, arcing may occur during the evaporation process,
which may lead to pitting on the rods. Using a sharp pair of scissors, clip off excess
material from each post. After a final cleaning using an SPI Easy-Duster, the fiber head can
be placed back into position, ready for another coating cycle.
