Hello there, welcome to Newcastle! We're on the quayside with a pretend beach with real sand and I have met my new best friend: Fatemeh.
I've literally just met her, and she's really really nice, and she is a volunteer for the St John's Ambulance, right?
I sort of started as a bit of a, go to the weekly meetings, have a bit of fun, sort of youth group, and then it sort of just progressed from there.
So I'm gonna put you on the spot right now... and I'm gonna give you a scenario.
Okay, so, she just fainted on the beach... and she's fell over, she's still breathing though, so we're just gonna...
...just gonna help her.
She is breathing 'cause we can see her breathing. So we're just gonna put her in the recovery position. Right.
It's okay stranger, you're in safe hands...
And that's the recovery position! Alright! We've done it! You've not fainted, you can put your head up! She's alright, we saved her life!
So obviously I'm interviewing here for NCS Spotlight, and I know you already volunteer for quite a few things... do you think you'd ever consider doing NCS?
It's a completely different experience because a lot of volunteering doesn't offer you the opportunity to start something new in your community.
Not only do you volunteer for St. John, you also volunteer at an old people's home, don't you?
Yep.
So what is your favourite thing about volunteering for people?
Everything you have to do, all the commitment, it pays off at the end, because people say thank you to you.
Not only do you get the smiles from people, but you also get lots of experience as well, which I guess is gonna help you out loads when it comes to University, or jobs, or whatever path you choose to do, right?
Well if you think about it, all forms of volunteering come with different skills. You learn leadership skills, teamwork skills, and there are skills that you will always need throughout your life.
That's terrific, I mean a lot of it is just giving up your time and being there, right?
Yeah.
Which is just lovely because not a lot of people give up their time, so... kudos to you.
