\f0\b\fs24 \cf0 Increased Interest in CTE, Part 1 \
\ Kim Green:\'a0
\b0 One of the exciting things for me over the last couple of years is that whole bunch
of groups have taken interest in career technical education.\'a0 So now when we started to see
all the groups that are on the screen before start to independently talk about career technical
education and say, \'93We see the promise and the transformation that\'92s happened.\'94\
\ We see that it\'92s not necessarily just vocational
education we labeled but something that we really have responded to in needs of the economy
in a really deep way.\'a0 So that it wasn\'92t about just saying, \'93OK. \'a0New name, same
old thing.\'94 \'a0But that we really did take to heart and used the federal money in
a lot of instances to try to more fully integrate academic and technical education.\
\ We were the first system, if any of you are
historians that really focused a great deal on gender equity.\'a0 We\'92re the first system--\

Kim Green: \b0 \'a0 I know Bart.\
\
\b [Laughter]\ \

Kim Green:\'a0 \b0 I knew you\'92d be happy with that.\'a0
We\'92re the first piece of federal legislation that actually had an incredibility in it.\'a0
We are the first piece and still really the only piece of legislation and community that
looked at building systems across lower levels between secondary and postsecondary education.\
\ And so with all of those reasons that these
groups started to say, \'93Hey! \'a0We know we have a problem within high school education,
transition to postsecondary, and completion of postsecondary and a couple of years ago
these groups also started to see, especially the business folks, that we have a problem
in terms of a disconnect between where we\'92re putting our education dollars and the needs
of our business and industry community.\ \
The pipeline was broken and so, all these groups came up with different reports, different
things.\'a0 Governors Association had a policy summit where they actually gave recommendations
to governors.\'a0 What can you do to support CTE? \'a0State boards of education, created
a bootleg, still up on their website if you want it.\'a0 It\'92s applicable for local
school boards and talked about what kinds of conversations should leadership be having
if you want to support CTE.\ \
\b 02:12 \b0 \
\ From a labor economist\'92s perspective, from
merely academicians, Harvard School of Education you can\'92t get more academic than that.\'a0
From a math or economic perspective, people were trying to craft the plan to improve the
economy of our country.\'a0 We have great support for the work that we\'92re doing.\'a0
So this is an amazing kind of platform to be able to be doing the work that we\'92re
doing.\'a0 And making the tough decisions that we\'92re making tremendous opportunity.\
\ Many of us have said, this is a window of
opportunity that we could have have dreamed of if we had the choice to.\'a0 It\'92s a
once in a lifetime opportunity, really, to make some change and to pull some people into
our network, into our family.\'a0 And being able to help serving more students\'92 heed.\'a0
So, it\'92s really encouraging to see all these groups interested in CTE; a little overwhelming,
truth to be told.\ \
Any of you read any of the works by Jim Collins\'92 \'93Good to Great\'94?\'a0 There\'92s a piece
in Jim Collins\'92 book that says, \'93Great to have people on the bus, but you want to
be the driver of the bus.\'94\'a0 And we felt a little bit like that in CTE.\'a0 It was
like, \'93Oh! This is great.\'a0 All these people are interested in CTE.\'94\'a0 We\'92re
a little worried that people might hijack us, our bus.\
\ And take us in a direction for only one purpose.\'a0
So CTE is more than just a dropout prevention strategy.\'a0 It\'92s more than just creating
workers for a particular industry.\'a0 It really is broader than that.\'a0 So great
interest, a little bit of caution.\ \
