A key constrictor to moving forward with a full scale renewable energy program for the
nation has been the lack of transmission here in America. But we have an effort under way
which includes all of our sister agencies within the United States Government to make
transmission a reality for renewable energy. And so in the days and months and the years
ahead, you will see thousands of miles of transmission lines to bring renewable energy
from the place it is produced to the place it is consumed.
As we harness the power of the sun in the southwest, we need to be able to move that
power from the desert to the southwest to places like Phoenix and Los Angeles and Albuquerque.
As we harness the power of the wind in the high plains and throughout the Atlantic seaboard
we need to be able to move it to the places where it's going to be consumed in the larger
cities.
And so transmission is very much a part of our comprehensive energy agenda and we at
the Department of Interior are taking a very responsible role in standing up about 5,000
miles of new electrical transmission lines.
