When I got the cochlear implant,
people said: Lois, your voice is entirely different.
And I think it's because I was not really hearing myself
with the hearing aids like I do now with the cochlear implant.
The work is done by the brain.
The brain really wants to know what's being said,
and it takes that electrical impulse
and turns it into a voice, into sound.
If you have a cochlear implant, do not expect it to be normal hearing.
It is not normal hearing.
It just enables you to hear so much better.
If you don't hear, anything you can do to help yourself to hear is a plus.
No matter what's your age.
If I was able to be ninety, I think I would do it.
Because it's going to increase the joy
that you feel for the rest of your life.
There should be no age restriction.
What it's done for me is
to give me a great benefit
of having sound back.
Having voices,
having music,
having nature
that I didn't hear.
