My name is Vlad Khomutov and I'm the founder of Cover.
Cover is like a top forty chart for social content about any topic
personalized to you. The moment I sign in, I see a personalized summary of
everything that's happening on the internet. Only the best stories
personalized to be interesting, I have.
So, for example, if I'm interested in motorcycles, technology, and concept art or
maybe architecture...
Cover will actually go out and find the best news out there about these topics,
and actually sort them in the order of relevance and priority of what I should
be reading right now. Two things really happened that led to the
idea
behind Cover.
First, I got really really frustrated with my Twitter.
Just looking at the amount of information flowing from my Twitter feed
Uh... made me overwhelmed. I couldn't really understand what was going on there anymore.
Second, I got my motorcycle license. It may sound very unrelated, but when
I started doing research online about what motorcycle I should be buying, I realized
that I was visiting fifteen different websites that were absolutely
disconnected. So I came up with the idea to create a place where all the
information about a product you love could come to a single place and solve the
problem of this information overload.
There are two million YouTube videos being watched every sixty seconds, seven
hundred fifty thousand Facebook posts, and hundred and seventy-five thousand
tweets sent every minute. That adds up to a lot of information created by social
media channels everyday. With all this activity happening out there, I
decided to create a product that would select only the best quality news for
me out of all those billions of posts, created everyday -- personalized
specifically to me.
So what makes a magazine reader particularly loyal, is that they're
engaged with the subject that this magazine is about. Up until now, it has been a
one-way communication where I'll have to go and actually buy the magazine and read
something in the magazine. With Cover, I'm creating a new business model where publishers
actually can communicate directly with the readers and readers can actually communicate
back directly to the publisher, through this online platform where the community
actually curates the best stories themselves.
