Please mentor me. Me. Me. Fire Chief says: "We need your help."
Superintendent: "We're working hard to meet the needs of our children."
"Please read to me." "Me." "Please mentor me."
Mentoring is rewarding." "If I to make time," "If I can make time," You can make," "You can can make time."
"Mentoring only takes an hour." "Please read to me." "Me."
Digger Phelps: "These kids need you." "Please read to me." Superintendent says: "Together we change lives."
Digger Phelps: "Be a mentor."
Students of Perley Primary Center
line the sidewalk in front of their school for a lesson
that could never be taught from a textbook. "Education is just more than
learning about
English and math about things to know about values." Values
such as respect, freedom and American pride. "It's a flag and it means a lot to me."
9-year-old Benjamin Ibarra,
a third-grade student, says there's a reason his handmade flag means so much
to him.
"Because I'm out here
tring to see the policeman because of the funeral. South Bend Police Officer Corporal Nick Pollizzotto
was shot to death
responding to a call at a local motel.
Perley Primary Center lined the procession route
that fellow officers in Polizzotto's family traveled, as they made their way to
bury
their fallen brother. "He attended our schools here
he has been a part of our neighborhood,
a part of our lives here and we just
really wanna say goodbye to him." "We all want to express our deepest sympathies
to his family
and and coworkers." We often we of them have police officers come into our schools and talk
about safety in the neighborhoods... so the children
learn that police officers are
very important to us."
Hadil Alammouri: "We care for them."
A message that is clear.
"I just feel sad and happy because I'm out here."
Sad but happy-- the same way many officers in this procession
said they felt when they pass by Perley Primary Center.
Emotions some believe somehow mother nature was showing on this day as well.
Julie Armstrong: "There's a reason that the rain is coming down the way it is right now,
we're not the only ones crying." "The students are very excited
they are a part of this tribute to him."
A difficult lesson outside the classroom, but a a lesson which the staff here
hopes students will remember for life.
For South Bend Community School Corporation, I'm Judi Lykowski.
On Tuesday April 17th,
likely high school Air Force Junior ROTC program
it a monumental milestone toward milestone that most high school cadets
rarely witness with my own units today and general
Kelly everybody can vice commander a visit by a three-star general
and as high ranking on trash Ford a three-star general be here
just in South Bend area was amazing because you know
you seem like all these big cities as though you know from becomes all been
a high school was a you more news on lieutenant-general
Christopher Kelly from Scott Air Force Base Illinois was here on a mission
that mission to present that Chief Master Sergeant bring me mickey
and cadet Major James Wagner with the highest junior ROTC on earth go
valor award for hussein is hand I was like
you know gaming whose bones you know excite me what on these two men this
distinctive honor began on this roadway
one cold wet October night when they were on their way home from swim
practice
their teammate Nick moves its was behind the wheel that carmel their
roles are and
house on just control and went to left
I've had over cracked it I had the brakes on
anything ABS Donna funds by hydroplaned
head next thing I know where crashing in the word
a whole cabinet on the water honor we hittin
are him among banking looking over
no cab just went black cuz all waters building quick
next thing I know I wake up and I'm in the water under the sea
gasping for air I was down there to give up my seat on I just started swimming
goes you can see absolute see absolutely nothing
those like pitch black I just wanna Sloan our space the funniest
when I came up hours dead in middle river
so I was I was out there but
a guy was on the swim team goes you how to fight those currents
when would you like to realize that was was still in the water they return to
the truck
broke out a window and call them to safety through the window I am really
surprise dollars made it out safely and we're just
with minor cuts and bruises I am really grateful that we did
I help them with my life I am thankful
for everything they did I'm glad they are getting on
I think you'll love it in to receive this is a true honor
because they're so where really given out so a cadet
his actions reflect great credit upon himself his family
the cake or include high school the award recognizes the most outstanding
voluntary act of self-sacrifice
and personal bravery involving conspicuous risk
of life above and beyond the call of duty James Wagner has been awarded the
Air Force's gr-qc
goldwell or cracks in the personal blog okay
come on to have but even without the No
its is still nothing number
while whole phone they had a bond already play
like after the accident I think that bond expand it
iraq me involve me into it as well you know
we all feel very close to him you know the never so
is definitely a since the Brotherhood in between us now
it's very common for teachers to be able to
or have the luxury to pull the door closed and teach the students the way
they want to teach them
and not have to interact with other other teachers
a practice that has happened traditionally for decades
teacher Denise Martin admits that was the norm I was used to
coming in my room doing what it is
I need to do I want to do I see the best
a teaching method that teacher to better Meyer says left her little to no time to
do anything outside of isolated planning
it was a very rare to speak with anyone outside the English department
and left little to no time to really get to know the students
which is vital in helping them succeed especially
at the freshman level we have over seventeen hundred students and they seem
to get lost in the shuffle when they're not
monetary but thanks to the implementation
a small learning communities through freshman academies South Bend Community
School Corporation freshman
now have a safety net you know we knew that there was a a significantly
a need for change that would boost the graduation rate for this
urban school corporations four high schools and improve attendance
January 2000 by Washington State with
a pilot program with which had four teachers on it
in since that time buyer in Sanders the assistant principal at Washington High
School says
the small learning communities initiative has expanded to the school
corporations other three high schools
were freshmen academies worse tablished but use tabs parameters
for teachers to be able to engage in quality conversation about students
into a also provide the opportunity to to collaborate
a about quality teaching and learning okay so there's nothing else we can do
on teaching with you which happens through teams
was that just sounds like another job to do but once
you lay the groundwork for that it's actually easier Jan a sousa
clay high school is a team leader in small earning communities
each member of the team teaches a different subject to the same group a
freshman
each team is very different throughout the four schools and within the schools
and that's the beauty of it
it is not heavy-handed by administration Susan many of her colleagues say not
only duty members benefit
so to the students telling them more accountable for
their grades and their setting standards for themselves and what's coming down
the road for them
we will really pay attention to that before we try and catch before they fall
through the cracks and so did
provides insight into the students I believe we get a chance to know them
better
they don't get one voice going home about the problem thank you 6
and each teacher's sing the song
parents now not only is the program helping discipline students
but there could be a link to why statistics for attendance and grades
have improved
for Washington High School's freshman class we are seeing students
improving their academic performance and we're seeing students who want to be in
school
Susan Pinto hot an English teacher at Riley high school
says before there was no cohesiveness for freshman
these kids didn't follow each other from class to class each day
and in this way the teachers are able to identify at risk students
and we can all get there at the same time itself
one teacher watching anymore it's like all of us are and it helps we've had a
lot of successful interventions were students
a meager Chu all ski a special ed coordinator for Pinto hot steam
says the small learning communities approach benefits special needs kids as
well
before swallowing communities we had our own classes when pulled out all the kids
this year especially with the Los changing in indiana
we've got all the kids onto regular classes which has helped the tremendous
amounts and the changing behaviors among the kids because
they know they're out and related classes so they don't feel like their
stuff like it as much
we're seeing the quality of work going on which is our goal another bonus she
says
general and student see her as just another teacher in their classes
source students aren't necessarily identified as having a disability
now a teacher record its non their special ed teacher but
the rest the class does not know that they know that privately and Costello
Washington High School teacher who helped pilot the program
points out another positive all of my freshman this year
taking freshman English for the first time in the old days before the freshman
Kenny
anywhere from have to two-thirds of my classes
worry people but this way they're all true freshman
Freshman Academy teachers see a prosperous future
for the growth for the program really in the next five years i'm hopeful
that we were having a more collaboration where we can do
team projects more where the students with see more
of crossover cross-curricular crossover as
early as next semester we're hoping the pilot
gender-based classes sometimes what our team the boys and girls
to me I've heard them out last year's Kyle freshmen say that
I miss being up here I miss you know the moment
so they do miss it because they get that individual attention
have the reasons you should do that a similar concept teacher Lori Moore says
is already in the works
their sophomore year we're starting a career pathway
so we're having kind of a smaller learning communities
that'll be starting their sophomore junior and senior year and that'll be
starting next year
when it comes down to it monies will run out and
and being able to make this program last is
is key I'm happy with that I wouldn't trade out to it even when the grip runs
out I don't care but im not doing this for the money I'm doing this I like it
personally I don't think that it would be best for the students for us to go
back
to the way things work um primarily because
I know that we know the students better this way and I know that we can provide
more
safety net especially for a freshman
mmm
