VOICE OVER: The Komatsu hybrid excavator is a major innovation in the mining and construction
industries. Komatsu Australia uses the same innovative
thinking to create more business opportunities. SEAN TAYLOR: We’re focused on how we can
use information and communication technology, specifically, to leverage our business position
and to focus on customer goals going forward VO: Komatsu Australia supplies earth moving
equipment for mining and construction across Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia.
IAN HARVISON: Telstra and Komatsu have actually had a relationship since early 2000s. In 2009
we actually looked at the cloud solution That’s where we actually enhanced the relationship
and now to a whole of business solution so in 2010 we actually shut down our data centre
and moved that all totally to Telstra Cloud Solution being one of the first companies
in Australia to do that. PAUL BOHANNON: The Cloud environment is supported
by our Next IP® and Next G® networks and it’s quite critical that it’s all interlinked
in a seamless managed service. Komatsu runs all of their core applications within the
Cloud. SEAN: The move to the Cloud from Telstra has
enabled Komatsu IT to really focus on business solutions rather then having to worry about
our IT system we’ve got a large IT infrastructure so that has been a great success from my point
of view. PAUL: Komatsu buy a lot of managed services
from Telstra, those services come, operated and managed by Telstra, this is what Telstra
calls NAS services- VO: Soon after Komatsu moved to the cloud
they decided to put the solution to a rigorous test.
IAN: It’s a requirement that we have Sarbanes-Oxley or SOX to ensure that our disaster recovery’s
tested and is robust to actually support the organization.
VO: Across Easter in 2011, Komatsu simulated a failover of its Pitt Street data centre
in Sydney so all functions switched automatically to Melbourne.
IAN: We actually ran our organisation for 3 days on that environment and then failed
back to the production environment in Pitt Street it’s the first time in the organisation’s
history where we actually conducted transactions and business processes on the DR environment.
VO: The test was significant event for Komatsu because it runs all its pivotal systems in
the Telstra-managed cloud - from its core SAP and Microsoft environments, including
all web-facing technology, to its customer portals, Lync Voice and its entire mobility
platform. SEAN: We actually lost no data, as a CEO I
was extremely happy because I’ve got the confidence that I can be up and running for
business regardless of any situation happening. VO: The success of the test now motivates
Komatsu to actively look for new ways that the Cloud solution can enhance its business.
PAUL: They use mobility; field force enablement; the use of tablets; then we moved into things
like video with Polycom. IAN: The Cloud solution delivers to Komatsu
a platform that allows us to be more flexible, more agile.
SEAN: We choose to work with Telstra because they spend a lot of time trying to get to
know us and understand our business needs so it’s very much not a transactional relationship,
it’s one of partnership.
