From Colorado's high definition news leader, this is 9News,
Alright, the Denver Fed Center, in Lakewood, is also saving some money through "green energy".
You might have noticed some changes if you have driven by lately.
They're expanding the Solar Parks near Kipling and 6th Avenue.
Now, this is what the original solar project looked like while it was under construction,
back in 2007. After they were completed, the 6,300 panels
began generating over a megawatt of energy. And, these are the new solar panels currently
being added at the Fed Center. Once it's complete, the solar field is expected
to generate a combined 8.2 megawatts of energy. That's enough to power 15-percent of the Fed
Center's yearly electric needs, making it one of the greenest campuses in the country.
Well, our Federal Agency, the General Servies Administration, set a goal of being a Zero
Environmental Footprint. And, in 2005, the Denver Federal Center, set
a goal to be the greenest campus anywhere in the United States.
So, the additions really gave us the chance to get a "leg up" on not only our regional
goal, but also our national goal. The solar panels are being installed on the
Denver Fed Center by Colorado based, E Light Wind and Solar.
The company has worked on several other Federal solar projects, including the one that was
recently completed at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
There is so much change going on over there, the light rail and the new hospital that's
in there now. You live in Lakewood, right?
Well, I'm kind of a little north of there, I go over there often, and it's just constantly
changing every time I go. It's just getting bigger and evolving.
