So a long lead is an industry term that really is only used in PR. And I feel like everyone
is so confused. Like, what's long lead? Long lead is simply a long lead magazine. It's
a magazine that works three months in advance. And usually those are the magazines that you
see on stands; Elle, Maxim, Vogue, In Style, Marie Claire, Men's Health. All of those magazines
plan their issues three months in advance. So right now we are in September. They're
working on closing December. So right now, a publicist needs to know that those magazines
are working on December, so I need to be pitching my gift guides because they're figuring out
what to tell their readers to buy. They're about to start pitching January, which would
be health trends, losing weight, New Year's resolutions. So long lead is simply three
months ahead in knowing what month they're on, what stories they're working on, and being
three months ahead to meet their deadlines and criteria.
