I want to welcome you on behalf of Block Gallery,
tonight we have a rare opportunity
to introduce the collection of Professor Dragan Nesic, by Steffen Markus.
Mr. Nesic is here with us tonight.
I will just briefly say some basic biographical information
about the author Steffen Markus.
He was born in 1952. in Lucerne, Switzerland.
He acquired his education at the Art School at Lucerne
and is engaged in artistic photography and therapy by poetry.
He had exhibitions at various places around our globe.
However, Professor Dragan Nesic will tell us some more information about him.
Good evening. I am pleased that my friends,
and friends of art came here to see the exhibition of Marcus Stephen,
since this is his first representation in Serbia,
with numerous exhibitions, and one of them
is in this very interesting Block Gallery.
The first thing that people ask me about Marcus Stephen is:
How did such an interesting artist come from Switzerland to Serbia?
He had a project three years ago called Forest’s Dream.
I was invited to exhibit in that project and it was the beginning of exchange.
The exchange which is a global phenomenon, phenomenon of network and mail art.
All these works that you can see,
and these are not all of the works that I have, came by mail.
The works that are not on exhibition,
because they would not fit conceptually,
are concrete mail art where he intervenes on the envelopes and parcels that he sends
and that could be special segment for exhibition.
As for Marcus Stephen, he is a truly multimedia artist.
In addition to being a photographer, like here in part;
these works are extended media,
he is interesting as a sculptor, draftsman and a poet.
His book of poems is currently being prepared.
Writer Miljan Despotovic, on my intervention,
is going to publish this book in his publishing house “Svitak”.
As for these particular works,
since I have already said that they are multimedia,
there is no need for detail interpretation.
He is a very well informed author, who can play with the history of art,
with various techniques and with crafts.
The thing which motivates me
to create and introduce such collection of works,
is the ability of the author to vary traditional themes
and to treat such traditional themes in a quite new way;
by intervening with script, collage
he puts it in a computer, prints it out
and if not satisfied he moves further.
In such a way you can get
an authentic work which is not archaic.
It is modern, but filled with lyricism and peace
that we all need in these shocks of technological era.
Thank you. I don’t want to take any more of your time,
I think that Markus has sad enough with his works.
And I want to thank Dragan because he is here with us tonight,
and now you can enjoy in this exhibition.
