Solar Decathlon (noun): An international innovation contest among universities,
which has been organized by the US Department of Energy and the
Spanish Government since 2002.
Adrián Auth - student team leader The Odoo team is the first Hungarian team
which has ever participated on this Solar Decathlon competition.
We actually started this whole thing in the summer of 2010 with my friends.
We two started it, then there were three, four later twenty people...
Dr. Gábor Becker -Dean, Faculty of Architecture This is a project, in which the guys,
the students work voluntarily, so nobody forces them to do it...
They voluntarily assume this great task which means serious work.
It may take 8 hours of my day.
10-12 hours.
It needs several hours a day.
Katalin Bukta - structural design Well, I was here since morning, I came back
in the afternoon also, then I went home and I continued drawing it...
This competition is about that university teams design and actually build a
a sustainable house powered exclusively by solar energy.
Kitti Kõrösi - architectural design I thought if I join this team,
well, then it'll be good basis for my future career.
Zsuzsanna Leskó - construction technology We get to know companies, people,
we take part in conferences, we write articles, professional articles...
Bálint Pfeningberger - building services I consider it as self-education,
so thanks to it I gain some extra professional experience.
We learn how to negotiate, how to write material selection lists... so altogether
a lot of stuff you don't really learn at the university.
Orsolya Nagy - communications team leader Every workteam tries to finds its possible
sponsors, obviously we happily accept product sponsorship, or even better if
somebody may support us finincially.
It's also good for the companies, because they get to know the talented students...
and we mustn't forget it's a great advertisment, because in Madrid
more or less 200,000 visitors come to the competition.
Among our mediapartners there are the Építészfórum ("Architects' Forum")
and Elektrotechnika ("Electrical Technology") for instance.
Orsolya Birtalan - communications We were published in many professional
magazines, we were even on cover of magazine Építéstechnika ("Building Technology").
Beside that, we participated at Construma and Renexpo expos last year - which was
a quite big hit for beginning. We go to these expos this year as well.
I think we are completely among the strongests, this is what the organizers
told us in Barcelona and in Madrid too.
And, you know it's a great thing! Now we have the opportunity because we're still
students. I beleive an international con- test like this is really really great, cool.
They also liked the house and we only got positive feedback about how we communicate.
From the eight faculties of BME, actually professors and students of seven faculties
participate in the project.
And the range of the possible choices is quite wast, so it means we are free to
bring up ideas, designs... and sometimes it really needs a lot of time to
figure out how to realize our ideas.
Dániel Palotai - architectural planning During the 'Week of Creativity' organized
by the Department of Urban Planning, the 1:1 model of the Odoo-house will be built.
We use lightweighted metal scaffolding system exactly following the geometry of
our plans. During the week fifty students will occupy themselves with covering the
the lower 2 meter high surface with different textures.
It's a really nice feeling to see the house in its exact 1:1 scale, the size in
reality... to walk around and imagine where is going to be the bathroom, the
the bedroom later in Madrid. So it's exciting also for us!
We start the construction-assembly works in the middle of June, and we'll finish
the house in August. And... it goes to Madrid, where from the 2nd of September
the competition starts.
If you can participate in such an independ- ent creative work, the experience will be
something so elementary that you'll remember in all your life, and will
determine your professional attitude.
Well then, we'll win... yes, sure.
Obviously, this is why we are doing it! For what else?
