A HCLU production
Although the Civil Guard Association for a Better Future, a right-wing paramilitary group, no longer patrols in Gyöngyöspata,
various extremist groups still regularly show up in those parts of the village where Gipsies live.
At half 11 p.m. my wife and I came home for cigarettes and to eat,
we wanted to go back to sleep after,
and then we noticed
that five people in black uniforms were here,
two of them were bald and I recognized them,
on the a Gipsy row, that’s the smallest issue.
Were they locals?
Yes.
And the two bald men came in to the edge of the pavement
with that stone – you can see those two stones over there –
and smashed two windows with them.
We were here in the corridor.
When we saw it, we ran into the bathroom, locked ourselves in, we did not dare to come out.
One of them fell in here,
it was here, yes, one of them,
and there were plenty of splinters.
And the other here.
The other, hang on. One of them here,
and the other here.
He threw it from the side, it came in here.
Thank God, lucky us,
that we put the children in a safe place beforehand.
If my daughter had been home – she is depressed anyway -
one of my daughters is already so depressed
that she wets the bed,
in the school she gets fits, always, constantly.
Unfortunately, the police too is like this:
the policeman came in, I showed him what happened
he picked up the stone, brought it out here and put it down over there.
That’s all.
I asked him where the crime scene investigators are,
that's usually what happens in such cases,
but he did not reply.
He spent ten, five or ten minutes here, maybe not even that long.
He asked me: “Aren’t you making it up?” and things like that.
Did you recognize the people?
Yes, the two bald ones, I did.
I even told the local police officers to arrest them
because these were the ones who threw the stones in here.
They answered that we will discuss it next week,
because that's when I will record the police report.
Because the first thing that came to our mind was
- because it happened to Gipsy brothers, to Romas – that if we go out, they would shoot us.
What did they shout exactly?
That you will die, dirty Gipsies, lousy Gipsies.
You will be dead if you don’t escape from here, from Pata.
They terrorize us. And they want to open a training camp in Kecskekő,
here, on the Gipsy row.
This too, only so as to make us scared.
It used to be such a peaceful village before,
we used to do agricultural day-labour, the entire summer. .
We lived peacefully together; we helped them, and all.
Now there are no jobs, nothing.
Before we could even choose
which job to take.
There used to be so much work, we could hardly cope.
