If I was to pick out two subjects that concern all people everywhere. They would be:
1.the message of tolerance. Tolerance for which the name Martin Luther King stands.
2. Our responsibility regarding climate change.
The project is concerned with Martin Luther King Jr. Specifically the celebration of his
speech 'I have a dream' which happened 50 years ago during the March on Washington,
in 1963.
We are celebrating today with four schools, two from Berlin and two from Brandenburg,
in order to show them that values and peaceful protest can effectively change society. That
is what we are celebrating today.
Also we are celebrating the 45th anniversary of his speech 'Ive been to the Mountain top',
which took placeone day before his death on April 3. And that's the other reason we are here
today. We will return here with the same children in August (the true anniversary of the,
I have a dream speech) with music and food, when the project is completed.
The sunflower seed is seen as a sign of peace in the world today. And for that reason it
is not only important to explain to the children what was important historically, but also
to look to the future. For that reason they need to make a commitment to the future and
that takes the form of planting a sunflower seed in the ground. They will hopefully make
a connection between planting of the seed and the event here today.
I am very happy to be part of this today.
- We received an invitation from the U.S. Embassy at the school and our teacher asked
whether we wanted to be part of this. Then we planned everything, because it is a good
idea, because it is important and because we are coverying this in history class. That
is how it came about. I thought it was pretty good, but some of the parts i found a bit
boring, but in general you can say it was good.
- Pia how important is tolerance and egal rights at your school? Is this something that
you deal with in the school?
- Yes absolutely. In the school we are all against the far right and i think that this
event fits very well into our thinking.
- I feel that this was an interesting day. This is one of our current topics in our English
class at school. We have just written an essay on Martin-Luther-King and for that reason
it was interesting to hear some more about him.
