My name is Varian Salters and I'm from Willimatic Connecticut
After high school - during high school I worked at a cafeteria, cleaning tables
and...sweeping the floors...and I knew I could do better and stuff - I wanted a better job
So...little while after high school I started a job working at Sodexo which is a food company
as a beverage runner
Filling food and and orange juice
and milk and stuff like that, and refilling the soda.
I worked there for a few years...I think around 3 years
And I still wanted to look for a better job and I also relocated to a different town - to Norwich, Connecticut
and I got a job at Bob's Furniture, changing light bulbs
and vaccuming and building furniture
But that still wasn't my dream job.
I had a dream job where I have my own desk and stuff like that.
So my dream job came about one day when I walked into the DDS office in Connecticut - or what was then DMR.
Department of Developmental Services
and I saw a job opening for self-advocate coordinator and I applied for it
and it took a long time to hear about it, but eventually I heard about it and um...
I got the job and I was happy
I start self-advocacy groups and help self-advocacy groups that need help
I speak at conferences and let people know they have rights and they can speak up for themselves
I do a lot of stuff - make flyers, have a little bulletin board I maintain at work
"and you have your own desk?" Yep.
'So what would you say are, in terms of having a job, what advice would you give to someone about how to be a good employee?'
I'd tell someone who was looking for a job I'd tell them to
Try out different jobs, keep advocating and let people know his interests are/her interests are
Tell them...um...let them try that!
Working is good you get paid and get to do a lot of fun activities; go to dances and stuff
and buy stuff you want, like a new computer...
