Hi I’m Tanner Hirakida.
I am currently on the W.E. Ricker, I’m a watchman and we conduct science work.
So today we just started off with a CDB which is basically
we send an instrument down below the surface and it collects a sample of the temperature
and contiguity of the water that we are going to be testing
and then we drop the bungalow down and receive samples such as plankton
and any surface animals, tiny animals like that. That’s basically what we’ve done for today
and normally after this we start trawling and catch fish for the scientist.
My general tasks as a watchman, I find myself on the bridge,
keeping an extra eye out for the mates, looking for boats and any signs of distress,
lights and reporting them back to the mate,
and just generally I’m an extra set of eyes up here.
I got into Coast Guard just this January and I worked on cargo ships before.
I went to a four year program called nautical sciences at BCIT in Vancouver
and basically studied weather, charts, stability and it was nice
to find myself here on my own coast in Vancouver sailing with the Coast Guard.
It’s hard to specify a favourite moment that I’ve had with Coast Guard
but there been a lot of good one especially seeing all the natural wildlife:
dolphins, whales, orphuses, seals but I have to say
one moment that was special in particular we were up in Prince be channel
and we saw I would say there’s probably about 250 pacific white sided dolphins
and they were playing all around the ship
and that was definitely a cool moment working with the Coast Guard.
I’m glad I ended up with the Coast Guard on my own coast
and I hope I enjoy working here for many years to come.
