I define leadership as someone who
inspires, someone who listens, someone
who is prepared to take a gamble.
I define leadership as the ability to work
with people and develop people to become stronger.
I think it’s having a vision, I guess a strong sense
of self.
You need to be brave, you need to be resourceful.
Leadership to me is being able to understand the
people that you lead.
Leadership to me is to guide people and to show them
a path.
I see it as a conductor in an orchestra, everybody in the
orchestra is important and we work together to
create something beautiful and meaningful.
My name is John Allen and it’s a real joy for me
to welcome the members of the Be. Leadership
Programme for this year.
Be. is about changing this world, to ensure all the
citizens of this country can achieve to their potential.
I hope to get out of the Be. Leadership Programme
self confidence, to stand up and actually be counted.
I have so many passions to help people so I hope to
find some stepping stones towards that goal.
What I hope to get out of the Be. Leadership
Programme this year is the chance to meet new people,
to expand my leadership skills.
I’m going to learn, listen, absorb the knowledge
and expertise of the other participants.
I would like to become somebody who can give
all my knowledge back to my community,
to help people understand their potential.
I would like to be a successful leader and
into the future for my peers and for any people
that I meet along the way.
I hope to form a lot of new networks.
I just want to mix with people and take away
knowledge whenever you meet people and
there’s always something to learn.
For me it’s a matter of acknowledging
those workshops, people who have come
along and spoken to us, taking those
learnings into the world.
It’s about overcoming my weaknesses and
overcoming what’s stopping me achieving
what I can visualize and what I can see.
What I hope to get out of this programme is
to be able to learn those practical skills and
actually go out and use the skills that I learnt here.
Hopefully I would like to review myself and
become more confident and be more
empowered to be a great leader and a role model.
I want to be able to use my leadership skills
to benefit people who have mental health
issues like me.
I’m interesting in leading further change in
society, I see some issues that need to be
changed so hopefully I might learn some
tools to assist with that.
I want to have the skills to be able to be a
leader for other disabled and speak when I
can for them and make sure that people listen.
I hope to listen to all the amazing
participants and learn from them and
together we can be empowered into making
social change.
I see every chance of flight in this year’s group
and together we can transform this country
and ensure that all New Zealanders can fly as
high as their potential allows them.
