>> Welcome to VZ Green TV.
Thank you for joining us, I'm Jim Gowen,
Chief Sustainability Officer.
We are very pleased that for our first episode of VZ Green TV,
our CEO Ivan Seidenberg has agreed to join us.
Well, Ivan welcome to Verizon Green TV
and thank you very much for joining us.
>> My pleasure, hello Jim how you doing?
>> Very good, from your prospective do you think the
information and communication sectors, specifically the space
that Verizon plays in, do we have a special role to play
in addressing these issues?
>> Well I think we have two roles,
the first is the way we look at it when you look
at this 98-2 rule which you've taught me Jim,
you know this whole issue of 98-2.
We only contribute about 2 percent of carbon emissions
so when you look at our sector
in our special place in the economy.
So as a starting point we're clearly not one
of the prime movers of emissions in the marketplace
so I think we get a chance to show that forever
through our technology, our practices, the way we think
about running our business we've always tried
to be energy efficient in the process.
Now the 98 percent which is everybody else,
we have great technology, great experience and I think
that we can help everybody else through the use of smart grids,
smart technology, smart systems, move people into a place
where they too can save lots on carbon emissions.
>> So what does all this mean from a Verizon perspective,
we know that Verizon has a host of solutions
to address sustainability issues
for our customers and the economy.
Can you share from your perspective what are the key
things that Verizon can bring to the marketplace.
>> You know our company would love to be in a position
to use our skills, our technology,
our people to help our society become a lot better and serve
as a model for the world so when you think of the fact
that the use of ICT, you know information communication
technology over the past ten years people estimate
to save 15 percent on carbon emissions if you look
out at new studies that would indicate
that through smart building, smart grids and all the kinds
of things that could happen there could be another 15
to 20 percent saved just by the enabling technologies
that we have, that's a great position
for our company to be in.
Jim, if you also look at some of the programs inside our company
in which we work very hard at recycling our wireless devices,
you look at all the things we're doing to create alternative fuel
for our fleets, you look at all of the practices that are
in place or putting in place I think we become an excellent
example for how people should be thinking about making America
and American industry much stronger going forward.
>> Ivan I want to thank you for joining us here
on our first segment of Verizon Green TV
and really appreciate all the support you've given to us.
>> Very good, thank you I'm glad to be here.
