Solo expedition to Skarvereiret
Suddenly, out of nowhere fog appears.
Okey. Here is a status rapport from the tent.
Yesteday i laid wheater bound maybe two kilometers from
Prestestølen. A sudden wheater change brought wind, rain and fog. I crawled in to the tent
pretty soaked. I dried the clothes with body heat. When i woke up the morning on the second
day, the wheather had improved. Just clouds, second to no wind and no rain. Decided to
continue towards Arne Ness' cabin. I crossed my fingers and hoped that the wheater would
be stable, but the wheater gods where yet again against me. When i came towards the
peak at 1850 metres above sea level, the fog came gliding in quite quickly. It took about
one minute before it surrounded me, and i couldnt see more that maybe 50 metres. I continued
to walk on compass course towards the cabin. But after a while i had cramps in both my
legs, the wheater worsned. Wind speed was picking up and i decided that the best thing
to do was to set camp. I am surrounded by rocks laying in a 15 degree slope. So it wasnt
easy to find a good spot to place the tent. Right now i dont know exactly where i am or
where i have walked, but i think i am somewhere near the peak of Presteskard mountain. Again
i have 50 meters of sight, my clothes are soaked, the tent was allready soaked from
yesterday, my sleeping bag is soaked and the temperature gauge showes 5.7 degrees celsius.
I have been outside to adjust the tent, because i didnt do the best job the first time as
i where pretty tired and couldnt feel my fingers. The tent is now fastend rock sollid. I dont
have water, so im not able to make dinner. I can hear a stream not far away, but i cant
take the chance of loosing my direction walking away from the tent. My mood is good! I eat
candy, nuts and crackers. I read books. Im a little dissapointed that i didnt make it
to the cabin today, but the mood couldnt be better these conditions taken into consideration.
I hope the wheater improves til tomorrow. It turns out to be a very uncofortable night.
I lay in my wet sleeping bag trying to dry clothes with my body heat. The temperature
drops a few deegress during the night. The wind increases and it snows densely. I wake
several times with pain aching in my hip and knee. When i wake up the next day the wheater
has improved a little. To my suprise i see that i have walked further south then planned.
I have set my tent only 50 meeters from steep cliff leading down to the pass that separates
me from the cabin. I stay in my sleeping bag waiting for the fog to lift. At one moment
the fog liftes so much that i can clearly overlook the whole pass. I can now plan a
safe route towards the cabin. I have to find the cabin. I dont think i can recover strength
to a return trip, and i cant stand the thought of another night i the talus with weat equipment.
Exactly at the time im starting to get accustomed to the thought of spending another uncomfortable
night in the tent, the roof of the cabin appears out of nowhere.
Another status report. Finally i found the cabin. It appeard out of the sea like fog. This is where Arne Ness
in his younger days rock climbed. Inside the cabin im making tacos.
I'll quickly swaddle the cabin. I listen to this crank up radio. And i found this beer from Aass, and the roar
of enthusiasm can compete with the one Alexander Gamme did when he found candy in his depo
at the south pole. The cabin has two bunk beds. Here i will be pleasent as a king in his castle.
My backpack hides an armchair made by Arne Ness himself, as the whole cabin
is. The cabin has a small oven. And now i can dry all of my clothes and equipment.
I am now going to show you how it was like to wake up in Skarvereiret. Please come with
me. Here i sleep. Woke up today at 10 am. Look at this view. Down here you can see Arne
Ness' first cabin: Tvergastein. Here is the view from "my" window. In the distance you
can see the Hardanger glacier. Lets have a look outside the cabin.
During the night its been snowing. The sun is shining and the view is magnificent. Of course i have made morning
coffee. Thats normally the first thing i do.
I want to show you something that is totally awesome.
This surely is top ten on my list of the best things i've experienced.
Have a look at this. Here i am, with binoculars and a book. Im sitting in Arne Ness' armchair,
and if i want to swing my feet of the cliff i can. It's mainly blue skyes, only in the
far distance we can glance upon som small clouds. It is sunny and it is amazingly almost no wind.
Its totally wicked and gives me such an adrenaline rush to sit here and read a
book. Its sooo.. It should not be possible.
