In most of the world, people that they say they're deaf;
this is a deaf community, deaf school, deaf people.
They're not deaf; they're just hearing impaired.
And so 99.8% of them we can help.
Helping the children and people of Haiti hear is one small part of a bigger goal.
You know the motto of the foundation is "So the World May Hear”
and that’s what we’re really trying to do.
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba you like that?
Oh now he’s getting it on that one.
Ba-ba-ba-ba.
Ba-ba-ba-ba.
Yeah!
He’s hearing his voice for the first time.
Whenever we start a project like this, you have to get on the ground and go to work,
and once you start going to work you find you can work through any challenges.
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. No?
Bonjour. Bonjour mon ami... ca va bien!
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. That’s good? Okay.
If you're not getting enough power, I’m gonna bring you stronger aids right away.
And we’re gonna go up a level and we’re gonna try again, until we get it just right.
I went with Starkey because something that’s really important to me is obviously my hearing.
You know without that I can't do what I love.
And the first thing that they get to hear themselves do is kind of sing
and so for me that’s amazing getting to hear that.
La-la-la-la.
La-la-la-la!
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
Ba-ba-ba-ba.
Ba-ba!
Yeah, she got it.
Ahhh.
Ahhh!
Oooo!
Ooo.
Ooo.
Perfect!
So it’s about being sensitive but also getting a good result
so that they can hear as much as they possibly can.
You love it?
Originally we came down here to fit about 50 to 60 kids as
an initial visit but we ended up fitting a whole school
of about 200 to 220 kids from a deaf school who lost
all their hearing aids during the earthquake last year.
We identified people to work with us on the ground here,
and so we’re connecting through to try to find these people that were dispersed.
Before the earthquake we could have found them more easily.
But now we’re gonna go connect back through the system and find the people
that are here that need us and try to bring them the help that they should have.
All day, even after I left to go visit other people they were
still working to make sure every kid had a hearing aid.
And that’s what I love is there’s nothing fake about them.
They do all the real work and they're there and know each person’s name by the time they leave.
You want yours? Okay.
I think Miley’s special. Miley really cares. Miley really wants to help.
And I think that’s what the world needs and I think she’s a great example to young people.
No I see. Do you see?
(Children singing)
(singing) Ain't about how fast I get there. Ain't about what’s waiting on the other side.
It’s a climb.
Our philosophy is really alone we can't do much but together we can change the world.
We’re blessed to be part of so many of those moments
around the world as we travel and help people in this way.
It’s one thing to try to fix the body; it’s something else as we go,
we nurture the spirit and it makes these people come alive.
