I’ve been in other states but I always end up coming back here
because I feel like it’s the calmest state
I was in Pennsylvania and New Jersey
but life is too hectic there
and I came back here
I was at a printer but mostly cleaning
house cleaning, building cleaning
oh and in painting, I worked in painting as well
until I was 7 months pregnant with my baby
we’re not calm anymore
I always tell her when I go out
I someone knocks on the door, don’t open the door to anyone
aside from the neighbor and you
because you never know
I’ve heard in other cities
that ICE has come in and taken everyone
my baby is a U.S. citizen
and I am terrified they’ll send me to jail
and they’ll take him away from me.
for her, well I know they’d send her back to Costa Rica
but for my boy…
so that is my fear to be honest
it’s that we came to take jobs away from Americans
and they have said it themselves
the same Americans that are in agriculture
Nobody comes here to do the jobs that we do
painting, house cleaning
agriculture, tomatoes, all of that
so, to be honest, I don’t understand
what is the
what is the situation they’re talking about
in construction, you see Americans as managers
but the ones that paint, we’re Hispanic
I mean, the hard work is done by Hispanics
so, I don’t know what the situation is
if it’s racism
well, this state, many years ago
saw that with…
with people of color
and now they’re with this situation
and I think that they are going more against Hispanics
because we are all immigrants
from many different countries
from Sudan, from Africa, from wherever
but they’re relating it just to Hispanics
and I don’t know
I mean,
I think that’s the situation
this racism is against Hispanics, not against immigrants
I feel like there’s too much racism
me personally, with college no because no one knows I’m an illegal immigrant
I want to study medicine
I want to be an OBGYN
that they should think
and if they really believe in God
like many say
like they always say
God bless the U.S.A.
then for…
those things they say
they should also apply for themselves as well.
we came to this country
to try to survive
for our kids to have a different life
so why don’t they give us the opportunity
to be here, to move ahead
to get our kids ahead
and to be able to help the country
because we’re not hurting anyone
to allow us to pay taxes
just like an American
I went to pay taxes
over my, my mobile home
and they already asked me if I had driver’s license
and still being the property owner
I couldn’t pay the taxes
that I had to demonstrate
that I was legally in the country to be able to pay taxes
so, there was no way to do it
yeah, we went, as I’m telling you
to try to pay and we couldn’t do it
the neighbor, well the man that rents us the lot says
what a thing, I don’t understand
they complain that they don’t want to pay taxes
and when they come to pay, they don’t let them
and we say the same, I mean
many times I asked can I pay insurance for my family
they won’t let me
and if you go to a hospital
I mean, it’s very ironic
I say, it’s like
like politicians don’t think
they complain that Hispanics
get
get, free insurance for the kids
and we'll go try to pay and they won't let us
so, it's strange.
