Our hands are cut by broken glass.
And it's not just us -- children at home can be injured by this. See, I have a glass-cut here.
Scrap dealers tell us: "Break the glass, remove the plastic base and then bring it here."
It sells for Rs. 35/kg [80 cents/kg].
But every time we burst these bulbs, a splinter might injure our eyes.
They should manufacture bulbs using stronger glass.
And provide a special disposable bag in which people can pack the broken glass...
This will prevent any injuries to us or anyone who handles this waste.
These [plastics] can be recycled. We earn money from these...
But sometimes the contents from these leak out and cause dizziness.
Previously [scrap dealers] would not buy pesticide bottles. Even if we collected them, they would not buy.
So, it doesn't matter if scrap shops buy these or don't. I think that because they were manufactured by a [pesticide] company...
The company should arrange for the collection, disposal or recycling of these bottles.
Any waste that does not sell at all?
Here is one! You got it?
Of course I have! Why shouldn't I bring this?
These are Huggies [diapers]. These have no value.
These are used by infants, and cannot be recycled.
These are use and throw products. We collect them the following day.
It has an unbearable stench. How can I possibly store [or recycle] this?
Companies earn a good profit from these [sanitary napkins].
Each costs between Rs. 10-20 [20-40 cents]
These are used by richer people. The poor cannot afford these.
They use 4-5 at a time... That's around Rs. 100 [$2] ...
The company should include paper bags with the napkin.
Consumers ask us to give them these bags for free.
We make these bags [by recycling newspapers]. It costs us Re. 1 [2 cents] to make each bag.
This product costs Rs. 10...
The company should sell it at Rs. 12 with a disposable bag. They should tell consumers to use these bags.
Then we would not have to touch these soiled napkins.
She mentioned things that scrap shops do not buy?
Show the Maggi packet, please.
Do they buy these packets? --No. They don't.
Chocolate wrappers don't sell.
Tea packets, Maggi packets, chocolate [candy] foil.
Calculate how many packets make a kilogram.
A whole sack weighs 1kg. I earn Rs. 1 [2 cents] for the entire sack!
What do you want to tell the manufacturers?
Use recyclable packing material.
This sells at Rs. 12/kg [25 cents/kg]
Plastic like this gets recycled.
This plastic [PET] can be recycled and we earn from its sale.
Meena bai, what's in your hand? --Thermocol [polystyrene].
Suppose someone is ready to buy Thermocol at Rs. 2/kg [4 cents/kg]...
Where can we store it? How do we transport it?
How much space does 1kg of Thermocol occupy?
A whole tempo load weighs 10kg.
I could pack all of that into 10 sacks, but I wouldn't have the space to store them.
That's why I cannot collect Thermocol.
They make temple decorations with Thermocol.
It's useless to us, but companies do make a profit making it.
So let them continue...
But because it is so light, I want a better price for it.
Let the companies continue [to make it], but give me a better price for it.
So suppose you collected it and, say, you got Rs. 2/kg [4 cents/kg] What else do you need to collect this?
Space. I need space to sort it. I need space to store it.
We need vehicles to transport it from the sorting space to the scrap dealer.
The scrap dealer would also require more space. If he cannot store it, he cannot buy from us.
What kinds of space do you need? And where?
I need space wherever I work.
Also, our earnings are so low that we have no money to invest...
They say: "Here is the land, you build [a shed]." We don't have the money to do that.
How can I spend five times the amount that I earn!
How can I do this? I think the companies or the municipal corporation should build these sheds.
I'm willing to collect. But I need the space.
I need a [storage and sorting] shed in this space.
If the municipal corporation or companies do this, I am willing to collect this [bulky] waste.
The shoes made by this company cannot be sold.
No scrap dealer is willing to pay even 25p/kg [less than 1 cent/kg], for these shoes.
Citizens ask us to take these away. The municipal corporation forbids us from dumping these at the landfill.
Where do I throw these? What can I do with these shoes?
I cannot store them all at home!
I think the municipal corporation should give us space... Or the company should build a shed...
I will deposit these shoes there. The company can come and take them away.
Those shoes cost Rs.2000 [$40]
I don't care if they were bought at Rs. 5000 [$100]. They're not worth 25p [less than 1 cent] to me.
If the company pays for collection, I'll return the shoes to them.
Rubber flip-flops like these are worthless. I cannot sell these.
These are useless. I am asked to collect these...
The manufacturer should buy these back from us.
Today, I get Rs. 1/kg [2 cents/kg] for these. They are sold as "road-scrap."
They should pay us Rs. 5/kg [10 cents/kg] for this.
That's because 1 sack can only accommodate 1-2 kg of this.
We also need to earn some money out of it.
Also, I think companies nowadays make flimsy shoes that get worn out very fast.
They think that their company will fail if it makes durable shoes.
So they use materials that wear out fast.
People wear them out fast, and the shoes end up in landfills.
I think these [types of sanitary napkins] should be stopped.
They should come up with something new.
They should make something that can be recycled.
They're making [melamine] plates like these.
They break easily and end up with us.
These too are a major hassle.
Thermocol is used to pack very expensive goods.
They should make packing materials from something else. Something that can be recycled. This has no use.
These materials can be recycled. These fetch a decent price.
Bisleri bottles [PET] is Rs. 20/kg [52 cents/kg] Cardboard is Rs. 7/kg [15 cents/kg], metal is Rs. 6/kg
These fetch a good price. We feel we should get more materials like this which are recyclable.
If you use these materials, we will recycle every scrap! These items fetch us more money. We are always hopeful to get these.
I think companies have made mistakes with some products.
They should keep in mind the recycling potential of their products while designing them.
Imagine everyone in Pune or in other cities all throwing out this stuff.
These cannot be sent to a landfill either. What will the municipal corporation do with these products?
I think the companies that made these products should be responsible for recycling them.
