Are you worried that your network bandwidth is being taken over by floods of online video?
Then you should look at BlueCoat Networks' mach five wan optimization appliance, which
we are looking at its main Web console here. Hello, I am David Strom and today's screencast
will show you how this innovative product can reclaim and control video consumption.
Ê We all know that video can be a network bandwidth
hog, but these days there are more and more legitimate business needs for video, such
as Intel's site here. . Each minute on You Tube alone, people from all over are uploading
more than 24 hours of video content!
Companies are also creating more video from their own internal sources, too, such as on-demand
training sessions and live company broadcasts, like this one here that Blue Coat did for
its own employees Ê
With all this video content, it is harder to control and supply video reliably to corporate
desktops. As an example, even YouTube now has an option to autoplay videos when a user
brings up the channel. Ê
Let's look at this sample video playing over an already congested network, and you the
video won't even start playing.Ê Ê
Now we add the BlueCoat mach 5 appliance to our network and the video plays just fine.
We are looking at a animation, showing you that mach 5 is caching the video, so that
after the first person on your network views it, subsequent views happen very quickly,
and without consuming any more network resources.Ê
The mach five appliance also optimizes live video by automatically splitting a single
stream and then serving it many times. Video quality is unchanged and several hundred users
still aren't consuming any more bandwidth than what is needed for a single viewer.
Ê If we go back to our mach five console, we
see that the additional video plays are being intercepted and saving close to 99% per player
once we have optimized our connections. Ê
We are looking at a new console interface as of last year for this and other BlueCoat
products.Ê If we go into the configure/traffic managment section, you can see that we have
turned on optimization for RTMP, and RTSP, the video streaming protocols that are used
by many sites.Ê Ê
Video is just one feature and is part of an overall line of WAN optimization appliances
from Blue Coat that handle a wide variety of situations such as accelerating remote
access to email, files, storage and enterprise applications and speeding the performance
of Software-as-a-Service applications in the public cloud.Ê
