Millions of dollars collected in revenue from red light tickets, tonight an adversary will
say that red light cameras amount to a war against drivers, were going live now to DC
were Sam Ford is in North West Washington with the story, SAM, well Gordon that group
is triple A they have been at war with the city for years over speeding cameras and now
red light cameras, a two car accident with injury this afternoon at the inter section
of seventh and Florida North West, witnesses told us one car blew threw the red light,
no red light camera in this inter section but their are fifty in other inter sections
around the city, and triple A has raised the question, is the DC's record thirteen million
dollars revenue threw red light fines is more about safety or revenue, you better have a
lot of dollars in you'r pocket if you'r going to drive around DC, because they are going
to hit you'r pocket at every opportunity. Triple A complained millions of cameras are
not just fining motorist for running threw red light cameras but for turning right on
red without coming to a full stop, or getting caught in the inter section in heavy traffic,
views of motorists in north West who have seen the largest number of red light tickets
so far, we can't control what goes on up front, people are getting blocked in the boxes, the
sign up there that says their is no turn off you cant see from right here,. Traffic enforcement
revenue has been good to DC's coppers, add up red light, speeding and parking last year
and DC pulled in $177 million dollars, but not everyone is complaining, on my bicycle
i have been hit by a car running a red light, and Richard Layman with the bicycle pass organisation
says he supports the city and not triple A, they are condoning people running red lights,
which is illegal, and with a big truck is very dangerous. Triple A would disagree that
they condone running red lights, but Richard Layman says he agrees with Triple A on one
thing, he agrees that DC's fines of $100 and $150 are to high compared with Virginia where
they are $50 and $75, reporting live from North West Washington, Sam Ford.
