hi Im Stephen Sorken VP of Engineering at Splunk
Recently I've been spending a lot of time thinking about The Internet of Things
Industrial Data and how it impacts data analytics
take a look at this car it's collecting all kinds of data
such as the throttle position speed
location even the cabin temperature
of take the example of a fitness device say the one you wear around your wrists
collecting information about personal activity battery charge
and when it's connected to sync the point of all this
is that The Internet of Things is everywhere around us
connected buildings cars
airplanes medical devices
the challenge is not whether you have a connected device
it's more about how you make sense of this exploding volume of data from connected devices
what's the right technology to do so? what kinds of insights can we get?
when i first started at Splunk in 2005 we were focused on traditional IT data
we were trying to solve a basic problem of making sense of
application server
and network data from data centers fast forward to today
and i can now connect splunk to analyze data from my car
for example here's a splunk dashboard that's showing me
my driving habits like average and maximum speeds
fuel economy and cost and speed vs acceleration
today there are no such standards as Syslog around data collection from these sensors
you could argue that we really need one however
the current data collection techniques that Splunk already supports are very well suited
for data coming from sensors and devices once the data's index in Splunk
you can gain all kinds of insights for your business
and do so rapidly when i speak to our customers
it's great to see them using Splunk for IT Operations
and Security use cases as well as for The Internet of Things
we now have customers Splunking data from building sensors to monitor energy consumption
from medical devices for securing patient data
and from elevators to understand building usage
the list goes on and on at the end of the day
our customers are very creative and that's leading us to discover new use
cases for Splunk Use cases that we never thought of and continue
to amaze us we'd love to learn more about how you're using
Splunk for The Internet of Things
