Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is the latest game in the series of the same name published
by Nippon Ichi here in the States.
As in the other games in the series, the story takes place in a world named Gamindustri and
follows the adventures of Neptunia, the personification of the doomed Sega Neptune console, in a world
where the console actually launched and was successful. Neptunia is joined by a cast of
other moe- anime girls who represent other videogame consoles and even some cheat devices.
This time around Neptunia has been thrown into a parallel dimension where she isn't
the CPU anymore, and must figure out how to get back to her own dimension with the help
of alternate world versions of her friends.
The game is sports colorful graphics and music, and is well voiced acted, and there is a lot
of the voice acting.
The combat system is turn based, though your character can move around the battle field
freely based on their Move rating. It's kind of like Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter in that
regard.
Characters can also access their H.D.D supermodes at will, which is an aspect of the game I
like a lot, since it makes combat a lot easier and flashier.
As is typical of NIS published games, there is plenty of comedy and lampooning of traits
common to RPG videogames, which is highly amusing for someone such as myself. All of
the characters are pretty genre savvy and even aware they are in a video game.
Your characters are also constantly earning achievements for silly little things like
walking around or taking damage, which increases your character's attributes slightly each
time they earn an achievement.
One negative aspect of the game is that rinse and repeat kill and fetch Quests are the primary
method of advancing the plot. You have to grind to unlock the storyline events, especially
at the start, and I got very sick of doing the same "kill Sgt Frog wannabe" quest again
and again in the first three hours of play.
Still, if you like that sort of gameplay it won't be a problem for you. At least there
are plenty of fanservice *** shot moments to help pass the time. I can't say I feel
particularly strong about this title; for what it is, a parody of the console wars in
the form of a videogame, it's great, and it'll appeal to hardcore fans of console-style RPGs.
