My name is Robert Wilkinson. I've been researching tuberculosis for
nearly twenty years. I'm particularly interested in the interaction
between *** and tuberculosis
as both infections are synergistic on the development of the other.
One of the attributes of mycobacterium tuberculosis, the cause of
tuberculosis
that makes it particularly difficult to eliminate is its ability to
persist within infected human beings
for many decades.
It's estimated
from indirect measures
that up to a third of the world's population could be infected by
mycobacterium tuberculosis.
I think that it is possible and there is great hope that TB will be eliminated
not within a hundred years but within fifty years. But what that will require is
concerted,
multilateral interventions
and considerably greater funding
than is available at present.
My greatest fear for 2113 is that there will have been wars over
the distribution of natural resources, such as oil, walter and
food.
If I woke at any time in the next hundred years it would be the year 2050
because that's the year that the Stop TB partnership
has chosen for the global elimination of TB.
