San Antonio has a big stray problem. 150,000 -- 180,000 animals that are on the street,
not just including strays, but these are owned dogs and cats and even feral cats on the street.
So it's very important for people to fix to spay and neuter their pet. SpaySA, of course,
is a low cost vaccination clinic and spay, neuter clinic. We call it low cost, and of
course we offer free surgeries too, because we want people to realize that they can come
to SpaySA and get their animal fixed. That's the most important thing for them to do here,
is spay and neuter. Spaying and neutering can reduce aggression
in pets, it can reduce roaming. When pets roam on the streets of San Antonio, they tend
to get hit by cars; they'll get in fights with other animals, get into a lot of trauma.
It can shorten their lives when they aren't spayed or neutered. Because of the roaming,
because of other disease processes that can happen, and there's many different types of
cancers that can be avoided by spaying and neutering.
Mornings are very busy for us. We take the animals in and we do a brief physical exam
on all the animals; making sure that their heart sounds okay, that they have a good gum
color, that they don't have too many parasites on them that might interfere with the health
and recovery from the surgery, and just take a general look over the pet and make sure
that they're healthy enough for this procedure. We offer all sorts of wellness services to
keep these pets healthy. So we do what's called a "Wellness Clinic." And we'll do a complete
physical exam and take a look over the pet. If we find any health issues we'll recommend
they go to their regular veterinarian. But we can do vaccines; do heartworm testing,
feline leukemia testing, stool exams, and different things that will help to keep your
pet healthy. We're fighting every day to make sure that
everybody's educated about how important spaying and neutering is for your dog or cat.
Hi! Hi Diamond! We bring all our dogs here.
That's good! Most people don't realize that puppies can
have a litter at 6 months of age. So, it's very important to get in your pet before that
so we can get these animals fixed so they won't have an accidental litter. Word of mouth
is very important. And a lot of people want to know how to get their animals fixed and
then of course, SpaySA is their first option. I heard about SpaySA over the radio. We recently
adopted a kitten so we were trying to find different places to spay her and we heard
about the feline Friday events that they have here. Feline Friday is an event where they
will spay or neuter your cat for $10. This is a great facility and it's just awesome
that, that they can provide this kind of service to our community. They really don't charge
them anything. All they have to do is make the time and bring their pets.
I was here yesterday for my other dog, Hope. Her name's Hope. And she's doing fine. She's
doing really good at home. You know, she's recuperating. But, and I think we're going
to keep her an inside dog now. She looks so beautiful. If, if you have a dog, and, and
you know, you don't want your, your neighborhood full of dogs, you know, everywhere, I truly
recommend getting it spayed, getting it taken care of.
San Antonio does have a feral cat problem. We have some wonderful agencies here in town
that are actually trapping, neutering and releasing. Spay SA is one of the top clinics
that feral cats are brought to and then of course they are picked up by a trapper and
then released into their colony. We actually spay and neuter over 12 thousand animals a
year and it's growing. So every month we have 1,000 animals or more depending on what we
can offer through our free grants for our low cost surgery.
I feel great about being here and about being able to spay and neuter the pets in San Antonio
because I know that overpopulation is a huge issue in this city. Every pet that we spay
and neuter means that there's less puppies and kitties out there that are just going
to increase the population.
